I know the best time to be out bowhunting is Nov. 1 until gun season starts. Unfortunately, I do not have enough vacation time to take all of it off (only 28 years until retirement!) . So which time period in Nov. do you all think would be the best: Nov. 6-10 or Nov. 13-17? I was going to take the 6-10 off, but there is a full moon on the 5th. In my experience full moon = bowhunter's nightmare, but the rut will be in effect. Thanks for any input.

This year id go for the Oct 30 - Nov 3. Bucks are in the seeking faze at this time and move more looking for early doe in heat. Ive killed a lot of bucks on Oct 31. Nov 6 - 10 the rut should be on. h.h.

I have always liked the last week of archery season, I try and spend as much time in the woods as the little wife will let me, and she is usally pretty good about it after 27 years, She will go on her first muzzleloader hunt this season. Hope i can get her too be quite long enough to see animals, i plan on letting her hunt with me in my blind, i figured that would be the best way too help with the cold weather and her movement.

I don't think you can go wrong with either week. The full moon is a bummer for sure. They still rut, but like to do it by the romatic moonlight. The week before gun season it seems like a lot of gun hunters are out scouting too..

That 11/6 thru 11/10 time frame should be excellent, assumming you get some cool weather. If it's warm & windy, a lot more of the activity will take place under the cover of darkness.

I don't know about the central/southern part of the state, but last year up here in northern Hoosier country, the bucks were very responsive to grunts and rattling EARLY!!!
I plan on hitting it hard that last week of October.

Thank you all for your advice and opinions. I have been reading a book called "Strategies for Whitetail" by Charlie Alsheimer. It is very informative for an intermediate deer hunter like me. In it he says that the rut is timed around the moon phase. The seeking phase is 2-3 days before through 2-3 days after the "rutting moon" (the second full moon after the atumnal equinox). The chase phase is overlapping with the end of seeking phase and continues a few days after that, then the breeding phase begins. So according to him, the highest deer activity during rut this year should be Nov. 3-13. Of course this can be affected by weather, human activity, doe to buck ratio, etc. This is from a study that he and another guy (can't remember his name) started 12 years ago. Thoughts?

Can you split you vacation?
Take two days plus a weekend. Work three days then take the other long weekend and you end up with 1 day left for later.
8 days in the woods and a Chance to hunt both times in question.

I'd take Nov. 6-10 off. Usually bucks are cruising more around then. I want a buck looking for doe so he is can be lured in by calling. Plus when he is looking he is covering more ground.....all day!
It's cool to see a buck "dogging" a doe but sometimes it's hard to get a shot with a bow.
I finally got another week of vacation this year so I am off from Nov. 3 till Nov. 24!

I've taken the last week of archery season before gun season starts for 15 + years. Hasn't let me down yet regardless of moon phase or weather. Lots and lots of hang time though to make it successful. I look at it like this if I was going to Alaska for example and had to schedule a specific date, I sure wouldnt' sit in camp if the weather turned sour. And as far as the moon phase I'm just not sold on it. If it's full I hunt in the middle of the day as much as sunrise and sunset. Otherwise I just hunt.
