With the recent topics, I'm wondering how many of you personally know anyone who has been in Iraq or Afganistan. I'm not talking about your nieghbor's cousin's dog's vets daughter's boyfriend kind of "knowing".
Even if it's someone you haven't seen in a while, I still consider the as knowing them...

I know one of each. A Marine in Iraq, and a National Guard in Afghanistan. They both said things are ran very poorly in the military. They were both quite disappointed.

Sgt Rick Blakley......died in Iraq about 3 months ago. He had already been honored by Gov. Daniels for bravery and recieved a Purple Heart... he re-enlisted and was killed by a roadside bomb. I graduated high school with him in '90 from Avon. Totally quiet kid, wasn't in the "In" crowd, wasn't in the "Out" crowd...just a normal guy who voluntarily gave his life over there, so more folks don't die right here. He was honored before the Colts home opener this season, he always bucked the regs and wore a Colts shirt under his fatigues whenever he was out on patrol.
I also have a good friend who's brother is in the Special Forces in Iraq. No details of what he does, but it involves "softening" insurgent strong holds before the troops engage. I THINK he's a sniper...but not positive.

BSU- you and I are the unfortunate ones who knew soldiers who have died.
I was in Boy Scouts with Marine Cpl. Brian Wilson, he died in Iraq almost two years ago. That really hit home. Luke Frist (Army or Guard, don't remember which) was killed in Iraq as well- his parents and mine were really good friends way back, and I can remember his older sister, but unfortunately not him...
My cousin was in Mosul with the 101st Airborne when Uday and Qusay were killed. That was a worrisome 9 months. He's now out of the military.
One of the guys that was on the fire department with me was sent to Afganistan with the 151st in the Guard. He's a Captain and spent most of the time training the Afgan army.
I'm sure there's more people I know (both from Scouts and school) that have been or are over there (couple more guys from Scouts went to West Point and Annapolis and were still within their 6 year commitment when this all got started), but I really don't know who is doing what....

Sadly, I've lost track of the number of stories I've done on soldiers who have died in the War on Terror. Not much more difficult than rolling tape while having parents and friends cry as they try to remember their fallen soldier. Easy to get choked up while listening to their stories.
