Interested in knowing how many of you make your tree stands. Just take a guess at what your percentage is.
Climbers, leaner/ladder, hang on, permanent, all stands are to be included.

Neither! I have Jack Flash make'm and just hope I don't die because of his workmanship. He's been good so far though. Oh wait, I do have my Summit Viper XLS. That's for the places Jack doesn't want to carry the wood to.

All of mine are manufactured , but I scrounged some parts for a "redneck special" from the scrap can at work . It will be a low height hang-on , so even if it left the trunk it won't drop but a couple of feet . Basically it will be a comfy seat for a ground blind .

I own my own engineering/fabrication business, so I build all my own tree stands, with exception to my Summit Climber. I designed a lock on stand that I like better than what is out there to buy, and I feel it is safer. Also build my own climbing sticks.

A LOT of the present stands, steps and climbing sticks are made in China. The quality has gone downhill in a hurry and safety is left out in many cases. Buyer beware and use your safety harness 100% of the time. .

I guess I'm somewhat surprised that so many people have all manufactured stands.
Personally, I have 1 climber that I bought on clearance last fall that was manufactured. I've got a couple of wooden ladder stands that I made and a homemade climber and hanger. I'm planning to make some more hangers, as I too don't like many of the designs out there. I don't like the cables on so many of them- they really restrict room for my big feet!
How about some pics of your homemade stands?
Woody, I think the harness needs to be used with ALL stands, not just manufactured ones! Everyone should seriously consider some sort of belay system too, as falls probably happen more on the way up/down than they do when you are actually on the stand.

Absolutely.. any time one is off the ground they need that harness on. Mine is on from the time I step off the ground, all the way into my stand, while in my stand and all the way back down until I reach the ground. If I fall I'll just dangle a little and never bounce off the ground. .

i have a feeling that if i built it ,it would fall down, ill take my chances with the manf.ones and a good harness.

I've built a bunch of hang ons, ladders, a box blind, and even climber that didn't work too well. I enjoy tinkering and building stuff with my hands. All the better if it's a useful piece of sporting equipment. Also have a bunch of manufactured stands.

Summit recalled a bunch. www.harnessrecall2005.com/ I just got my first climber this spring and the harness was one of the ones recalled.

That's true... weren't these the oens that came with the stands? These weren't the Seat of the Pants ones they sell were they?

Yeah they were just the ones that came with the stands. I've got another harness but I figured since they were sending out another harness I might as well get it if I had a bad one. You never know when you might need a backup harness.

You never know when you might need a backup harness. I use a Seat of the Pants Fastback and really like it. Like you, I keep a spare around just in case. A friend of mine was using just a chest harness and not the full bodied one. I had heard too much about these flipping someone upside down or just squeezing the chest to stop a fellow from breathing in a fall. This young man is married and has a little boy, so I gave him one of my extra full bodied harness to wear. Woodmaster and myself use the climibing rope from Summit and are hooked up fro the time we start up until we are back down.
