The nickname " Weekend Warrior" is being tossed around on several of the forums and mostly the term seems to be used in a derogatory way. I submit that the majority of hunters are "Weekend Warriors" Most because work gets in the way of their hunting. I am sure there are many like me that can't get away just anytime to hunt. I am also sure that this fact doesn't make the weekend hunter inferior or less pure because he can't spend days and days in the field. Rather I tend to appreciate my time afield even more because it is limited.

The ONLY person we have to please when we go hunting is OURSELVES..

i think the term week end warrior more in the terms of a person who practices for a couple hours with a bow right before opening day or grabs his gun opening day and runs out the door to shoot at a deer.he may go out the one weekend and quit after that because of the weather. no dedication, just trying to get one so he can brag that he did. a man has got to put the family first ,and i feel for every hunter whos working for there familys and would like more time in the woods, i know ive been there.

Very true schoolmaster. I also hear the "brown its down" quote a lot in the same way. Some guys have to work for a living and like you cant hunt every day. If the guy has a buck tag and doe tag and only few hours each weekend of the season and wants some deer in the freezer then hes most likely going to shoot the first buck or doe he sees. This negative attitude is all tied into antler obsession and the "I hunt the proper way and if you don't hunt my style then you must be an inferior hunter" attitude. Like someone said in an earlier post a happy young hunter shows up at a check-in station with his small buck and the antler obsessed boys want to chuckle and make derogatory remarks instead of congratulating a young hunter on his success. As i said before "no wonder young people are not getting into hunting". h.h.

My brother is this way, granted he's hunted most of his life, the last few years he hasn't pulled his bow back 25 times, yet he's scored a bigger deer than me. I feel the "Weekend Warrior" are those that buy their license, and slugs the night before opening day of gun season. Take their brown 5 gallon bucket and just drive around until they find a woods that they might do some good in. Usually this guy can be found within 50 yards of me on opening morning of gun season! Weekend Warrior = Dude goes into Wal Mart the night before firearms season, buys his license and a cheap $1.59 box of "sluggers" for his H&R single barrel, goes out to the woods (late) opening morning in his brown carhart coveralls, orange sock hat and yellow farmers gloves, sits down on a white five gallon bucket, with his shiny siver thermos of coffee, smoking a Marlboro red.
Somehow, these are the dudes that always manage to whack a big one.

Steiny:
This is the guy who also crosses the fence because your 50 acres looks better than his 400. Walks right up under your stand and yells......."seein' anything".

My job doesn't permit me nearly as much free time to hunt as I'd like , so other than an hour or two in the evenings and the weekend I don't get too much field time . When I bought tags I waited until the week before the start of the season , and while I don't exactly shoot the first deer that passes I'm nowhere near as picky as some folks seem to be these days . B&D isn't my own philosophy , but if it looks like it will dress out enough I'll pop a 50 cent foster slug or a .54 roundball into it . I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks of the way I hunt , it's none of their dammed business anyway unless they have a badge on their shirt . Hunt the way that makes you happy and stop worrying about how someone else does . Am I a "weekend warrior" ? You bet I am , and proud of it .

The difference with him is though, he never sees anything. It's probably a good thing too!

Try going to Wal-Mart the Friday evening before gun season opens and see the line of guys standing at the sporting goods counter with a full pocket from a freshly cashed paycheck ready to buy a shotgun, slugs and a tag and go hunting 8-10 hours from that moment. Now that is scary, because there is always a LONG line of them every year.

Supporting myself and my family will always win out over hunting. Anyone that says any different is a peedrinker.

Well.....the way the deer herd is expanding in this state, it sure don't seem like "the weekend warrior" is doing any harm!

You guys have to remember that some guns being sold at chain stores are advertised as being sighted in at the factory and all you do is load them up and go hunting. Its not my cup of tea but i wont condemn those who do it. At least they are trying to become involved in hunting and bought a license or two. Every time i see a young guy or gal in a sporting goods dept and they look confused about buying equipment i ask them if i can help. A lot of times they are grateful and ask my opinion on what they should buy and sometimes they don't.
Most people on here are dedicated sportsmen and we live and die our sport. Labeling in-experienced people isn't doing our sport any good. h.h.

Most of the time they are very appreciative & thankful for your efforts.
