About a month ago I acquired an upright GE deep freeze from a friend who was trying to get rid of it since they never used it and it was taking up space in their garage. I gladly took it thinking I could use it for taxidermy hides / heads. I got it home and cleaned it up......(it looked like HECK)...and it worked great for about 3 weeks. Now, it wont cool at all.......... (luckily I noticed it stopped cooling before the things inside were able to thaw out). The compressor / motor runs.....you can hear sounds coming from the chill pipes that run inside the chest....but it is not cooling at ALL. So.......has anyone had a deep freeze worked on? I've done some checking on "how to" repairs and I know that it's nothing that the average do-it-yourselfer can do. I'm just curious what kinda $$$ I'm looking at for a repair versus just buying a new one. This thing is old, but was working great... No appliance repair-men on here are there?

Is it the compressor that you're hearing or just the fan ? If the compressor is running it should be cooling unless the freon leaked out somehow , in which case it won't run much longer . You should be able to get a local HVAC tech to stop by for a $50 "chat" about it .

a lot of HVAC techs won't work on freezers better to call an appliance man. make sure something hasn't been sucked up into the fan like a walmart bag or something like that.
A number of different things could be wrong though. The refrigerant could have leaked out but I doubt it if it's that old and has never had any added to it. Could be a motor, a capacitor, a thermostat..

Kyle..... you mean plugged in like a shotgun plug? ? Art....... No e-mails from ya, resend if ya can. Everyone else...... This freezer doesn't have a cooling fan........just the black compressor with a small square box mounted on it's side.......then all the tubing coming out of the compressor.

Not sure how big the thing is, but I have seen some very reasonable priced NEW units at places like Lowes, Menards and Sears. The days of REPAIRING appliances are gone, I don't understand how anyone can expect a serviceman to come to their house for less than $100.00, they will spend $10.00-$15.00 on fuel alone.
I think I would buy a new one with a warranty for 250.00 before spending 150.00 to have an old one repaired.

Sometimes a hand me down freezer isn't really a bargain compared to what it costs to run it/repair it. .

Yeah, right. I'll bet we don't have $10 worth of food in it and I've noticed that out electricity bill has went up more than $10 a month. Where is the savings I asked her? "Well, it's handy IF I want to get some meat at a bargain price." Yeah, right.
