There is an awful lot going on in the business world lately, including Ford proposing buying out 75,000 employees so they can, as they say, compete better.
I see it differently-I don`t begrudge Americans who buy foreign vehicles, (which are mostly made in the US), any more than I applaud folks who buy “American” vehicles, (which are mostly made overseas), since the greed runs rampant. Especially when a Toyota has a great chance of running for a couple hundred thousand miles, while it`s American cousin most likely will not.
Computer manufacturers have their support all coming from India, all the major pharmaceutical manufacturers have most of their manufacturing in Puerto Rico, a lot, if not most of, so called American vehicles are made overseas-it seems that every company that operates in the US has become so concerned with profits, as well as paying their CEO`s out of this world salaries, that they don`t care about jobs remaining in this country, they just want to appease the shareholders, and worry about their “bottom line”.
Jobs left the country when NAFTA was ratified, and now, we have many employers ignoring employment laws and knowingly hiring illegal immigrants for ridiculously low wages, all to maximize profits, without regard for the future of the nation. Add to that, the wages these hard working folks earn leave our economy and go to Mexico. Then there`s the always contentious argument that Americans have a sense of entitlement and don`t or won`t work as hard as foreign labor.
I`ve kiddingly told my hunting partner that the day is rapidly coming when we`ll all work at Wal-Mart, and none of us will be able to afford to buy anything from our place of employment.
What is going to be here for our sons and daughters, and even grandsons and granddaughters to work at and make a living? This is one of the few issues I see that is more urgent than land access for hunting, and habitat, but are there any answers? And are any of us willing to do whatever it takes to pressure politicians into doing what`s required to make things right? And what is the “right” thing to do? Is it to boycott business that don`t keep jobs in country? Is that even possible?
This is a crucial issue and one that requires immediate attention, and I`m willing to do what is necessary to try to make a difference, but where do we begin?
