Capt. Michael Portteus IDNR Law Enforcement MPortteus@dnr.IN.gov My question can you and if a hunter takes a deer and it falls in a spot where it isn't easy to retrieve it can you quarter it as long as the tag is on your person or antler/leg of the carcass for extraction so it can be checked in. His answer No, the deer must remain intact, with the head attached until it has had the permanent tag affixed at a deer checking station.
Should you find yourself in a situation where this would be impossible, contact your local Indiana Conservation Officer to inquire about being exempted from this requirement, PRIOR TO TAKING ANY ACTION ON YOUR OWN such as quartering etc. Remember that your temporary transportation tag must be completed immediately upon kill, and it must be attached to a leg of the carcass if it is left unattended or in the company of another person, and when it is being transported in or on a vehicle.
just so you know encase you get a deer that gets in a messed up spot and you have no choice but to quarter it.
