Will the youth deer and turkeys that are killed in the speciel seasons count against the youth hunters qouta? In other words will a youth be able to kill 2 tom turkeys in the spring instead of one?Chuck It will count against their season limit. The youth can only kill an antlerless deer in the youth hunt, so they will be able to pursue a buck or antlerless (according to their county limit) in the regular season. If they kill a gobbler or a bearded bird (only legal birds) then they are done in the spring season.

With a OBR....what difference does it make WHEN the youth kills their buck?

With a OBR....what difference does it make WHEN the youth kills their buck? The premise of the youth only taking antlerlesss deer is: 1)To gain them better access to hunting grounds 2) Teach them to be "managers of the deer herd". 3) help in population control IMO - I want them to learn to be deer hunters first and then work on the "managing later". We will work on this for future hunts.. .

Ya, I think what the idea was is to get the foot in the door as far as youth hunts go. Remember, last season they had nothing as far as deer and turkey went. It's been explained to me as a "progression." To me, I don't care if they can kill two toms or two bucks. It's not a big deal. Does only is supposed to gain them land access more also like Woody said.
I still don't get the people that say they shouldn't have their own seasons. I think it should help in recruitment, but we'll see I suppose.

......... Does only is supposed to gain them land access more also like Woody said...... That is actually what some of the deciders in this said, not me. I feel that is a decison best left up to the landowner. If approached by a father with a youngster in tow and asked the landowner himself can alwyas say," OK, but no bucks." If they landowner doesn't care then who is it us to say that the youngsters should have to shoot does only? As I said - let's hook them as deer hunters first and then worry about making them "deer managers". The main question is - What if a buck is all the kids sees all weekend? Would it not be better to let him/her take that buck and hook them? .

Exactly. All the parent has to say is ''we can shoot does only if you're worried about bucks." All landowner has to do is agree or tell them does only upfront. Oh well, in due time I hope.

lol Meant to say Exactly, I never had a shot all of archery on a doe last year. I only had 1, 1½ or 2½ yr old bucks in range. Not that that's a bad thing, but you get what I'm saying, no does for some stupid reason and this was over a month of hunting.

I think it's fantastic anterless or not. I can't see why anyone hoping to continue our great sport and heritage of hunting would protest in any way a youth season.

I think it is great too. I see Woody's point about what if a buck comes along. However, I know 2 kids that did kill decent bucks their first time hunting, and now they don't even get excited about seeing a doe. I think it's good to let a kid "earn his salt" so to speak by killing a doe first. I can definately agree with both sides of the argument. Plus, I'm sure they said does only to keep some whiners from saying "that's not fair, they killed a buck before I even got to hunt". You KNOW there are people like that out there!
