A smoker is contaminating the air, doesn't matter if he's at work, in a restaurant, in a shopping mall. It's not about an individual making a choice to not visit an establisment, it's about an individual choosing to pollute not only the air they breathe, but the air that is all around them. If I were giving off toxic fumes everywhere I went people would not like it, nor would the govt allow it. If an employer has 100% approval from their employees to allow smoking, than ok....they should be allowed to do it, but if one person objects I believe you must listen to that one person who is just asking for their air NOT to be contaminated with cancer causing contaminents.

My company put a ban on smoking on property on 7-01-05. I think it's ridiculous that smokers have to clock out and smoke off property. As far as no smoking in bars and/or retaurants, if it's smoky, don't patronize that establishment! It's that simple! It won't be long and the government will be banning flatulence, with the penalty being death by firing squad! I hate how "liberals" make MORE laws/rules. I do not understand their title.

I like the no tobacco use policy. Our company has the same policy inside the buildings. Heck, I chew myself on my liesure time occasionally, but not ever at work, no big deal. Frankly, some people's chewing habits are equally as disgusting as sucking second hand smoke. Pretty dang gross, spitting your cud in a bottle or cup and carrying it around, stting it on your desk, in your truck or whatever. If you've got to spit the stuff, you aint old enough to be chewing it.
I would further contend that smokers are less productive than non smokers on average, because they are always taking a smoke break, stopping work to light one up, fumbling for cigarettes, a lighter or whatever. We are being paid to work not smoke.
I do however think it's plum crazy that the government thinks they need to stick their nose in this issue. Fine and dandy when it comes to public facilities, but leave the private business alone. If he allows smoking, and you don't like it, don't go there. Pretty simple.

I smoke a pack or so a day.....It's a very bad habit I started when I was 14. I look at it like this, there are ALOT of other things I could be doing that are much worse....I like my ciggs so I have no desire to quit.
BUT....I will be the first to tell young folks....DON'T EVER START SMOKING...I wish I never did.
I started a no smoking in the building policy last summer at work, we got new computers and I dint want them all smoked up. As a smoker, I am not offended by non-smoking establishments, as I have always respected the non-smokers rights to have smoke free air.
Travis,
I have been in public places where I smelled the perfume that some women wear....THAT SHOULD BE OUTLAWED TOO!

There are some women who do bathe in their perfume, and yes....it's enough to make you gag at times........but at least you know it's not going to kill you some day down the line. There's a difference between offensive odors and hazardous odors.

That depends on where we are Jim.......... at your house, in your truck, sitting next to you at a bar? Yep, I agree with ya. If we're standing in line to get into a ball game, waiting for an elevator, or having tables next to each other in a restaurant....than your cancer causing smoke is in MY space. We'll continue this disagreement in a few years when you are taking your Chemo, on a respirator or talking through a speak-n-spell. (Not that I WISH that on anyone.....just saying the odds are in cancers favor)

If a smoker wants to smoke in a public place then we as non-smokers should help them. Seal off a "smoking room" in any resturant or bar, and have the smoke pumped in. A nice big foggy nicotine cloud as an exihibit. "Look kids, it's a smoker in his natural habitiat." "Don't peck on the glass, you know they can't run."
If a government wants to make the decision for us as a business owner. Then we should go all the way.

Where I work they have smoke shacks outside of the buildings for the smokers. Seems the smokers are getting 15 min paid breaks every hours or two but if a person was to take a short walk they are accused of being a slacker. I don't understand.

All that's really needed is some common sense and some good old fashioned manners , smokers and non-smokers can coexist in peace . We don't need more laws .
