Assuming that she passes the hunter's safety test, I'm going to take my daughter out to the same farm that I deer hunt. Tons of does running around out there. Easy to set up for 40 yard or closer shots too.
I've not seen anything in the regulations about the youth hunt yet. Anyone seen any official publication of the season?

I'm trying to get some kids to take hunting , and I've had plenty of interested kids express the desire to go . The problem is that none of them have had a HE class . My work schedule has also changed to where I can no longer accomodate taking kids to HE classes too , so if it isn't reinstated in the schools as an elective or extracurricular course it won't be long before there won't be anyone eligible to hunt in a few years .

dec - I think the new reg book will be out in July and the youth deer and turkey info will be in there. Also I think there will be a free hunting week-end in September this year. That probably won't be in the book as I don't have a firm date yet. But it will allow unlicensed hunters to sample the hunting experience without a license and therefore without an HE card.

My plans are the same for my oldest son (he's 10)...he'll be out with me a lot. Last year was his first carrying a firearm and he managed to take a deer on opening day of muzzleloader season. I don't think a day has gone by since then without us talking about that day.
I also have a 5 year old that I will introduce to the "hunting woods" this fall. We'll start with some squirrel hunting early on. I also plan to set up our ground blind sometime during deer season and take him out then. I know those first hunts will probably be pretty short just like they were with his brother, but that's probably what I'm looking forward to the most this year.

I'll see if I can dig out the rule that was passed by the NRC. I'm guessing that the date will be the first week-end in September to maximize species (teal, goose, squirrel and dove).

My bad. This was passed by the Indiana legislature effective July 1, 2006:
FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2006]: Sec. 6. Except as provided in section sections 1 and 18 of this chapter, every person must have a hunting license in the person's possession when hunting.
SOURCE: IC 14-22-11-18; (06)HE1138.1.3. --> SECTION 3. IC 14-22-11-18 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2006]: Sec. 18. (a) The director may designate not more than four (4) days each year as free hunting days for youth hunters. (b) During a free hunting day for youth hunters designated under subsection (a), a resident who is less than sixteen (16) years of age may: (1) hunt using hunting methods that are designated by the director and that are legal for that hunting season; and (2) exercise the same privileges that a resident is entitled to under IC 14-22-12-1(24). A youth hunter is not required to pay a fee or possess a hunting license. (c) A youth hunter who hunts during a free hunting day for youth hunters under this section must: (1) comply with the conditions and rules adopted by the director; and (2) be accompanied by an individual who: (A) is at least eighteen (18) years of age; and (B) holds a valid hunting license under IC 14-22-12 or is not required to have a hunting license under this chapter. (d) The individual under subsection (c)(2) who accompanies the youth hunter: (1) must be in close enough proximity to monitor the youth hunter's activities and communicate with the youth hunter at all times; and (2) may assist the youth hunter, including calling, but may not carry a firearm or bow and arrow.
Director Hupfer may use up to 4 days a year as free hunting days but he doesn't have to use all 4 days or any if he so chooses. The gist of this is a "try it-before-you-buy-it" concept. Take a kid hunting on this week-end and he/she doesn't need a license. If they enjoy it they can take the Hunters Ed course and get a license and continue to hunt.

So how do we go about getting them to set a date ?
I'm working on a youth hunt and this would help a lot.

Wouldn't it be great if we could get a youth only season, the weekend before firearm season opened. That may draw more youth into the sport.
It would be nice if the state had more HE classes, i'll have to drive at least an hour to find the closest one.

Lug - the first youth only deer season starts this year. I think it is the last week-end in September. The reg book will be out soon and it should be in there.
Jack
P.S. The first youth only turkey season starts next spring also.
