OUTDOOR WOMEN AT BIG OAKS NWR EVENT
The Big Oaks Conservation Society and Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge are hosting the second annual, Outdoor Women at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (located on the former Jefferson Proving Ground), Madison, Indiana, on Saturday June 3. OW@BO will be a one-day program designed to offer women ages 14 and over the opportunity to gain valuable in-the-field skills in an environment that encourages fun and success in the outdoors. The award winning program will target women who want to learn outdoor skills through a variety of courses including camping, fishing, outdoor photography, hiking, canoeing, bird watching, archery, shooting sports and much more. It will also allow women to develop a greater understanding of wildlife conservation and meet others who share their enthusiasm for the outdoors. The program will provide the foundation to train women as outdoor educators.
Registration forms can be downloaded from: www.fws.gov/midwest/bigoaks. To have a registration form mailed, call the office at 812-273-0783. Some classes are limited in size; so early registration is recommended to get into first choice classes. Registration deadline for the event is May 31.
Outdoor Women @ Big Oaks is an event designed to offer women a noncompetitive atmosphere in which to gain skills in the out-of-doors. Early bird registration before May 15 is $40.00 after May 15 $50.00. Registration fee includes a choice of 3 courses, lunch, use of equipment and supplies, one year membership to Big Oaks Conservation Society, annual (2006) pass to Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge and a canvas tote bag.
Big Oaks Conservation Society is a "Friends of the Refuge" group organized to support the goals of wildlife conservation and habitat restoration at Big Oaks NWR, develop environmental education programs, enhance public awareness, and encourage use and appreciation for the natural and cultural assets unique to Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge. BOCS website is www.bigoaks.org.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 545 national wildlife refuges, thousands of small wetlands and other special management areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 63 Fish and Wildlife Management offices and 81 ecological services field stations. The agency enforces federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries and conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Assistance program, which distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies.
