We aired a pretty cool story from Italy this morning... These fellas go out with dogs who sniff for White Truffles just under the ground. I guess they bring upwards of $2,300 / lb, so you can imagine how intense the hunting is for these mushrooms. I was just curious why you couldn't use a dog for OUR kind of mushroom hunting??? You have to see these dogs work! www.wthr.com/global/Category.asp?c=56710Click on the Truffle Hunting link.

The French have used female pigs for the same purpose for centuries , it seems that the truffle emits an odor very similar to the smell of a boar's breath , which excites the sow . The truffle hunter usually rewards the sow with an acorn to keep her from eating the truffle . And all this time I thought the French only slept with pigs ... ;D

Oil companies now have dogs that sniff out subterranean pipeline leaks. There is a local remediation company on the south side of Indy that had a lab trained for sniffing out leaks. Lol, they named her "Piper".
