DeKalb County hunting preserve shut down ST. JOE, Ind. (AP) A county board has shut down a hunting preserve after neighbors complained of shots straying outside the preserve property. The DeKalb County Board of Zoning Appeals said in a notice Monday that the R&R Elk Ranch Hunting Preserve near St. Joe, about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne, has violated the conditions of the special exception it received to operate. One neighbor said he found shotgun pellets in his house and shed. Another neighbor said a hunter shot a pheasant outside the preserve property. The preserveĀ¹s owners, Richard and Rebecca Reed, were ordered to appear before the zoning board April 10. The couple had agreed that Richard Reed would act as a guide on all hunts, said Zoning Administrator Sally Rowe. But she said Reed told her he has used other guides. The Reeds also have conducted hunts without receiving a certificate of occupancy from the zoning administrator, Rowe said. The Associated Press left a message at the R&R Elk Ranch seeking comment. The Reeds were granted a special exception in July to open a high-fenced hunting preserve. Elk, boar, pheasants and other game were hunted at the preserve. The nearly 150-acre preserve has an 8-foot fence around most of the property. Information from: The Journal Gazette, www.journalgazette.net
