From John Deem....
The Steuben County Youth Hunt is a fair chase deer hunting adventure for terminally ill or disabled children. There is no cost for the hunt, with lodging, food, license and any needed equipment provided. The hunts take place on private properties through out the county with two guides assigned to each child. The organizers and guides consist of public safety personnel such as Conservation Officers, Firefighters, Police Officers, Sheriff Deputies and EMS. Landowners in Steuben have also donated time and the use of their land for these hunts, many of which are rarely hunted by anyone. The hunt is scheduled for the second weekend of firearm season which is November 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th. The children and their families will arrive the evening of the 17th, hunt the 18th and 19th and leave for home on the 20th..
The lodging is being donated by Pokagon State Park. The children and parents will stay in the Group camp area of the park which is an indoor facility that includes showers, kitchen and sleeping quarters. All meals are donated and provided by the Angola Fire Department.
This will be the second year for this hunt. Last year 10 children participated with 9 deer being harvested.
We are currently looking for terminally ill or disabled children to attend this dream hunt. If you know of a child who fits this description and loves the outdoors, please let them know about the Steuben County Youth Hunt. Applications can be downloaded from this site, or you can contact Conservation Officer John Deem at (260) 665-3546 or email at j.deem@mchsi.com.
