Did Cheney shoot his hunting partner at 30 yards, or was it much closer...? www.tpmcafe.com/node/26663It now seems that he was shooting a 28ga with "open" choke with 71/2 shot. In a #8 load, you get 307 pellets in a 28ga, so that gives you a rough idea for 71/2... If Whittington got hit with 200 pellets, as is now being reported, that would mean over 60% of the shot hit him. I did some checking for test pattern data, and with an open choke at 30-40 yards, you're talking about 40-50% in a 30 inch circle... move up to 25 yards and you start getting into 60% in 30 inches... So to put 60% of a 28ga shot charge into a man standing broadside (what... 12-20" wide), I think (a) you're much closer than 30 yards, and (b) your point of aim would be directly at the target... What do you guys think...?

I was thinking the same thing this morning as I was watching the news this morning on the attorney's poor condition. There is a big difference in my mind between being "peppered" & being "blasted", which appears to be the case.

Thanks for the link, as I have never seen a hunting accident report. You know "everything in Texas is bigger", which apparently includes yardsticks.

I think they have tried to play down the whole story as much as they think they can get away with.

Who knows guys. I heard on the radio this morning that the piece of shot that migrated to his heart was 5 millimeters in diameter. That equals 20 caliber or 2/10s of an inch!!!!! With today's news I feel we never know what has happened for sure. I do know if that shot count is right, he was standing DARN close for an open-choked 28 gauge to do this. Another thought is....that piece of shot went to his heart, right? Well I think it must have penetrated an artery to wind up there so ,again, they must have been darn close to one another. In the end though, politics aside, I have no idea why a hunting accident of this nature is big national news. It was an accident. I am sure Cheney could not feel worse about it. What happened in Texas has zero affect to our National interests, so why run it in the ground? Next we will probably have to suffer through a bunch of Bull-hocky exposes' about how dangerous and barbaric hunting is and how this could not have happened if we could not own guns, blah, blah, blah. Stepping off soapbox now..............Hoosier.

Hoosier,
Although I hear where you're coming from on the story, I think the reason it's held on as long as it has was because at first, Cheney and the ranch owner made out like it was no big deal, guy got peppered by a few stray pellets, laughed about... blah blah blah...
Next, we find out the guy took virtually the whole load in the neck, face and upper shoulder, went down almost immediately, and there was no laughing going on...
Big difference in those two stories, and when it's the VP, that makes it noteworthy....
If they hadn't tried to play it down to begin with and told the truth about the severity of the injuries and the accident right off the bat, the press wouldn't be hanging on it...

jkd, you are probably correct why the press is bulldogging the story. My problem with it as a story is...I feel the V.P., a sports star, a janitor at a middle school, a mechanic, a bum defrauding the welfare system (in other words-ANYONE) who is involved in a hunting ACCIDENT should not be the subject of the national news for weeks nor submitted to an inquisition as Cheney has been. These are my opinions and others may disagree and they have my respect but not my agreement.

I don't buy that for a second. No matter what Cheney did after the accident the press attention would have been the same. The media is looking to stick it to anyone in the Bush administration for anything they can. Cheney accidently shoots a guy while Al Gore is in Saudia Arabia fueling anti-american propaganda and which one do we hear the most about?
