Winter eagle watching
---------------------------
Winter, with its bare tree limbs, offers Hoosiers one of their best opportunities to view bald eagles in Indiana, especially around the state's larger, ice-free reservoirs and rivers.
Three DNR properties will host Eagle Watch activities in January and February.
- Jan 14 - Patoka Lake's Eagle Watch includes eagle watching caravans, educational programs, and a close-up look at C-52, a live bald eagle that resides permanently at Patoka Lake's Visitor Center. Call 812-685-2447.
- Feb. 3-5 - Monroe Lake's Eagle Watch takes place at Fourwinds Resort in Fairfax State Recreation Area on the west side of the lake. The weekend-long event includes birding hikes and tours to eagle hot spots around the property. Call 812-837-9546.
- Feb. 4-5 - Cecil M. Harden Lake's Eagle in Flight Workshop will be at Raccoon State Recreation Area. The half-day programs include a search for resident bald eagles and a backyard bird feeder project. Call 765-344-1412.
Each property charges a nominal program fee. Call each property for registration before the event. Dress for the weather, arrive with your vehicle fueled for the viewing tours, and bring binoculars or a spotting scope.
Patoka Lake is near Jasper in southern Indiana. Monroe Lake is southeast of Bloomington. Raccoon State Recreation area is on state Route 36 in Parke and Putnam counties in west-central Indiana, 50 miles west of Indianapolis and 35 miles northeast of Terre Haute.
