White-tailed doe crashed through window into Southside department store's snack bar
Had it been a human, the charge might have been breaking and entering.
But because it was a white-tailed deer that crashed through a window at a Southside Target, the doe got off with a tranquilizer dart and immediate release to a rural area southwest of Indianapolis.
The 100-pound doe startled customers at the Target at 3700 S. East St., when she smashed through a window into the store's snack bar area about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
It is likely none of the people were as frightened as the deer, said Paul F. Smith, who was in the store shopping when the deer crashed in.
Smith had just gone into the snack area to get some popcorn for his wife, Karen, when he heard a loud crash. At first, he thought a car had come through the window, he said. Instead, it was the deer.
"That poor deer was so frightened,'' he said.
The deer sustained a head wound and possibly some cuts on her body from the glass. Smith said Target employees quickly used shopping carts to corral the animal in the snack area.
Indianapolis Animal Care and Control officers later used tranquilizer darts to subdue it, said Sgt. Tracy Hutchens with animal control.
The deer was loopy enough to be picked up and placed in the back of an animal control van, officials said.
Hutchens estimated she was 11/2 years old. He said the tranquilizer would wear off in about an hour, and the cuts were superficial and would heal on their own.
Smith, who works in real estate for the Indianapolis Parks Department, said there's no telling where the doe came from.
"The deer population is growing in Marion County,'' he said. "They get hungry, just like you and I do.''
