Sir Paul assails Martin over 'horrific' seal hunt

Take note, Prime Minister Paul Martin: you may not want to make friends
with any more aging rock stars.
Former Beatle Paul McCartney has sent a bluntly worded letter to Martin
threatening to create a storm of unwanted attention if Canada allows the
seal hunt to continue.
This comes just days after U2 frontman Bono was in Ottawa to declare he
was "crushed" by Martin's failure to commit more aid to help Africans
living in poverty.
While they're currently lambasting the prime minister over separate
issues, Bono and McCartney have joined forces in the past.
Earlier this year, the two performed together at the Live-8 concert in
London to call attention to poverty in Africa.
With the federal election getting into full swing, Martin doesn't need
to make any new enemies.
But McCartney is committed to putting this issue on his radar, said John
Grandy, senior vice-president of the Humane Society of the United
States.
A letter signed by McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney, was
hand delivered to the prime minister Tuesday, according to Grandy.
More than 300,000 seals were killed in Canada in 2005, according to the
Humane Society of the United States.
If the Canadian government doesn't stop the seal hunt, McCartney
promised to take action to bring worldwide attention to the seal hunt.
"We wanted to put you on notice that if Canada moves forward with
another hunt next year, we will do all we can to focus attention on this
unjustified, outdated, and truly horrific practice, including,
potentially, visiting the seals and the ice," says the letter.
