Bear Attacks Pa. Hunter After Being Shot Four Times Friday, November 25, 2005 HARRISBURG, Pa. — A black bear bit and clawed a hunter who had just shot it four times in what game authorities said appeared to be a first for the state. Samuel H. Beauchamp, 47, said he was approaching the downed 320-pound bear in Rothrock State Forest in central Pennsylvania on Monday, the first day of bear-hunting season, when it came after him. Beauchamp, of Newville, had just shot the bear with a .444-caliber rifle and was within 15 feet of it. He turned to run, but the bear put a claw around his hip and bit him twice, once in each thigh, before dying. "The bear wasn't attacking 100 percent. I mean really, it was dead on its feet when it came up. If it would have been 100 percent I wouldn't have been standing there," Beauchamp said Friday. Other hunters nearby heard a growl and came to Beauchamp's aid. "It was shock at first. It's like he came alive, like 'boom.' I guess he growled, like the other people heard. That motivated me to turn around and start running away," he said. Game commission bear biologist Mark Ternent said the attack was the first case known to state officials in which a bear had attacked a hunter who had just shot it and was attempting to recover it. Beauchamp was released from the hospital after about two hours of treatment. One bite went down to the bone. "I didn't feel any pain after it happened," he said Friday. "I'm a little sore now." www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,176729,00.html

I wish Indiana had bears...and other critters that COULD make you their lunch. I think it would thin the herd of the once a year "hunters" who just wanna go out and drop a big deer for their office wall....then their season is over. People wouldn't be so eager to walk around the woods if they thought that Smokey was around the next holler just waiting to snack on them. LOL.

"I guess he growled, like the other people heard. That motivated me to turn around and start running away," That line is classic... He should have made sure the bear was dead before approaching, as well as being prepared for another shot. Robert

A good representative of the old hunting saying:
"It's the dead ones that will kill you."

On a lighter note , does anyone remember that dipsheit about 2 years ago who said that he had wandered among grizzly bears and that they were harmless , only to have him and his girlfriend get eaten by a bear ? Well , he's gonna be on the Discovery Channel soon , they apparently have pre bear attack footage of this ahole playing with the bears .

I would think a .444 would be a bit light for bear, even the eastern blackies... not real good on penetration... I've never bear hunted, but would bring my Model 70 Winchester .270 to the party... :-)
Kevin - I saw video of that shortly after the attack and I think it's the same guy... they were filming around where the griz were catching fish and had their camp or camera gear set up right near the feeding area.... if I remember right, there's no video of him actually getting attacked... you just hear the screams...
People that don't respect the "WILD" in wildlife often get taught a harsh lesson...

Speaking of the Discovery Channel, they had a show Sunday night about a guy doing similar stupid things with lions in Africa. Seems the genius was convinced that he would be safe among the lions because he believed that they did not see him as prey. Someone was at least smart enough to make sure an armed PH was nearby to save his bacon if something went wrong. If the hunter was using soft 240 gr. pistol bullets in his .444, that very well could have been the problem.
