Does anyone else ever use a commercial ground blind to deer hunt out of? I have one of the Dog House blinds, from Ameristep, I think is is the manufacterer. It has the Total Scent Control or something like that, but I still always go through my scent elimination procedure. I`ve not had any instances from my ground blind in which I even came close to taking a deer while hunting from it. Have any of you? Do you have any tips for picking a set-up place, and for use? Do you hunt with the windows up, and plan to shoot through them, (bow only)? Or do you have the windows down?

I've hunted from an Ameristep Outhouse quite a bit , and I've had deer walk right up to it more than once . It doesn't have the shoot through mesh , and I normally gun hunt from it , so I keep the windows zipped up to "murder slots" . I usually set up my blinds just inside the tree line to take advantage of the background break up , behind scrub or brush whenever possible . I have found that deer spot it more often then turkeys do , but once they figure out that the new object isn't gonna move they usually forget all about it . Other than cover scent I take no special precautions .

The Doghouse is a tad tight for bowhunting out of.
It would work well for firerams. Brush it in good.
Wear a face mask even with the curtains up.

i use the same blind as kevin. i use it for gun hunting, especially if its raining. i cut some branches and use them to blend it in with the back ground. usually i try to set it up in a tree line or tall weeds on the edge of woods or fields. i zip the windows down on three sides and leave the back one up. i use a small folding chair and cross-sticks inside. Ive used mine a the deer reduction hunts and killed several deer from it. h.h.

I have one that is 4-5 years old. It does not have mesh windows to hide behind Zip down the windows and it is quite open. Have only used it when raining or taking the granddaughter and then firearms only. Am thinking about buying one of the newer ones with mesh screens to help hide behind. Never have seen a deer out of it though.

I have never used one. I have debated with myself on getting one before; are they really helpful?

I have never used one. I have debated with myself on getting one before; are they really helpful? Most of them are only fit for gun hunting until you get into the larger sizes , but having portable concealment that keeps the rain , snow , and wind off me has been invaluable . I can go nearly anywhere , sit a lot longer , I could even take a nap in relative comfort if I wanted to(and have) . It's lighter than a tree stand and you can set up in areas where trees are too small for climbers or otherwise impractical .

I have used teh Doghouse model for the last 4 years in KY. Great when the weather is lousy. Easy to set up and modiify. I have a small table that I set up and use with my handcannons. very stable system. It is big enought for two people if gun hunting. I have cut down a pair of folding chairs to match the table height, all of this folds up and is stored and carried in a deer drag sled either by hand or 4 wheeler. I also set my four wheeler up as a portable blind as well by using a camo cover and sitting against the wheel. I have attached a couple of pictures oe each setup. nmhunter

I really like your hand cannon set up. I bet you can reach out with that steady rest. I just bought a TC Encore 7mm-08. I may have to do something similar

I spend some of my deer season hunting out of my Double Bull Matrix. I take my daughters out during early bow season and we sit in the blind. It is nice because they can move around with out fear of being seen. I also use it in late season to get out of the wind.
I really enjoy hunting out of my Double Bull. In fact, at this time tomorrow I'll be sitting in it trying to coax a gobbler into bow range.

I just received the May issue of Indiana Game& Fish, and it happens to have an article in it about turkey hunting from commercial ground blinds. Not a bad article.
