hoosier hunter:
I knew it would be a Hawk. ;D Those things are reaking havoc around here. They have exploded in numbers in the past five or so years. I have personally watched them attack many different types of livestock and wild animals. And photographed many of them. They are a beatiful bird and very strong, and they can be quite a nuissance to many a farmer with chickens or rabbits. It will probably stay away now, but I would still keep up the screen top.

Here's a couple pics. The first one is when I walked into the chicken coup and decided at that point I didn't belong in there with him. The second pic is after I walked him to the door with a stick and he walked out. This was seconds before he hit the blue sky.

He has those wings out there showing you how big he is to try and scare you off..
Glad it all worked out for you and your chickens are now safe..

Reminds me of the Foghorn Leghorn cartoon... "I'm a chicken hawk..."

Yep, redtail. I think I would have backed away from that dude too. He looks pretty warm and cuddly but I would not try to wrestle him out of there.

Do like most farmers down this way do, shoot'em and leaving lay. Yes it is a federal offense shooting these, but most feel they have the right to protect their property as well.

I believe you can legally shoot those varmits when they are getting into your livestock. Should have given that dude a .22 cal supository.
Those things are cold blooded, effective killers. Pretty hard for quail or pheasants to get reestablished anywhere there is a good population of those varmits.

steiny:
They are destroying the Rabbit population, and Wood cock around me. I can walk into sometimes three or more Rabbit kills eaten by them in one day of walking.
