Think before you climb… content.govdelivery.com/accounts/INDNR/bulletins/3c1225aHunters! Stay safe this deer season. The majority of hunting injuries involve elevated platforms and tree stands, so stay safe by following the guidelines below. Before the hunt: • Read and understand the tree stand manufacturer’s instructions. • Check tree stands and equipment for wear, fatigue, cracks, or loose nuts/bolts, paying particularly close attention to parts made of material other than metal. • Practice at ground level. • Learn how to properly wear your full-body safety harness. During the hunt: • Wear your full-body safety harness. • Use a tree stand safety rope. • Make certain to attach your harness to the tree before leaving the ground and that it remains attached to the tree until you return to the ground. • Maintain three points of contact during ascent and descent. • Wear boots with nonslip soles. • Use a haul line to raise and lower firearms, bows, and other hunting gear. • Make sure firearms are unloaded, action is open, and safety is on before attaching them to the haul line.

That’s so sad, but I’ll never understand it. A harness is such cheap life insurance in comparison to the result of this story.

I have at least 3 or 4 buddies that don't wear them. I give them heck. Even put the lifelines in any stand I will be in. Told a couple I would buy them the harness too if they would wear it. No budging. I have hunted with a guy who fell and was paralyzed waist down. He was a big strong guy. Was elk hunting and other big game but fell out of the stand behind his house.
He never thought it would happen to him. I wore my safety gear on and off before that but have worn them religiously since that meeting.

My good hunting buddy John Trout Jr. wouldn’t wear one for a long time after they first came out.
He said, ”Willie, I'm not planning on falling.”
I looked him square in the eye and said,” John, I’m sure that everyone who has fallen, and some didn’t survive. didn’t plan on falling either.” It wasn’t much after that he started wearing one.

Come to find out this was my Nieces best friends dad. Absolutely devastating for them as expected. Not far from my property. I didn’t know him personally. Very sad indeed.

That is literally 4,500 feet from where I do most of my hunting in Starke County.

I know a guy who fell 28' 6 years ago and broke 10 ribs, cuts that required stitches had to crawl about 200 yards to his truck that still doesn't wear one. One of these days I will probably be making a post about his dumb ass getting crippled or worse.

I know a guy who fell and hit a screw-in step on the way down. Warmer day, so light clothing. It opene# him up from armpit to waist.

I know a guy who fell and hit a screw-in step on the way down. Warmer day, so light clothing. It opened him up from armpit to waist. OUCH.. We quit using screw in steps. Slowly transitioning to all ladder stands.

Yes screw-in steps need to fade away. Dangerous and not good for the tree either.
I have been thinking about the new see-through blinds I see advertised. Anybody have one?

I got one last year and never got to use it. I put it out last week for gun hunting out of. So far I really like what I can see out of it. It really opens up your visibility from standard blinds. I took it to thanks giveing last year and was showing it to my hunting nephews. One stated he was gona have one for this year and the other really liked it. Getting in and out is pretty slick, the opening has magnets,NO zippers, so dead quiet. The panels for the see thru windows work off a slide mechanism so no noise thier and quick access to open for archery and gun. I think I am gona really like it. No more than I have been in it I really like it. Onebentarrow
