A guy goes to jail for the first time. He gets put in a cell with another inmate. After a while the inmate moves up to the cell door and yells, "13!". Laughter echoes up and down the cell block.
A few minutes later, the new guy hears someone else down the hallway yell, "17!". Again, laughter echoes up and down the cell block. This goes on for a while.
The new guy finally asks his cell-mate what is going on. The cell-mate explains that the inmates have been telling the same jokes over and over for so long that they assigned them numbers. To save time, they now just say the number instead of retelling the whole joke.
The new guy decides to try it for himself. He goes up to the cell door and yells, "72!" The cellblock erupts in laughter that lasts much longer than any of the previous times.
The new guy asks his cell-mate what is so funny about 72. The cell-mate replies, "None of us had heard that one before".
