Text for the Day -- Isaiah 27:1-6 ---------- On that day the LORD with his cruel and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will kill the dragon that is in the sea.
On that day: A pleasant vineyard, sing about it! I, the LORD, am its keeper; every moment I water it. I guard it night and day so that no one can harm it; I have no wrath. If it gives me thorns and briers, I will march to battle against it. I will burn it up. Or else let it cling to me for protection, let it make peace with me, let it make peace with me.
In days to come Jacob shall take root, Israel shall blossom and put forth shoots, and fill the whole world with fruit.
Devotional ---------- The vineyard image was popular with the prophets. It is a wonderful metaphor of the work of God contrasted with the work of humans in the relationship we have with God. God plants and tends the relationship. The task of humans is to produce fruit and not thorns. God always takes the initiative, but looks for the proper response from humans. Keep the vineyard free from weeds and thorns and the harvest will come.
Prayer ---------- Guide my life through your Spirit, Lord, so that I may live to the praise of your glory. Amen
