Find another hobby that isn't so expensive, time consuming and heart breaking.

If you’re dead serious about waterfowl hunting wait until the season ends and then most waterfowl stuff will be on clearance or shop on Facebook marketplace for used gear like decoys coats and jackets. Buy a cano instead of a boat . If you’re buying a boat and you’re only going to be hunting FWA areas just buy a Trolling motor . A few FWA do have boats but that’s a few . Learn to use your calls and know which call cadences to use . Watch YouTube videos and start calling by a body of water that has birds and watch their reaction to your calling .

Also know what’s in season and identify the Duck that you’re going to be shooting . I myself ran into this issue about a week ago . The guys that I was hunting with wasn’t sure if teal were in season and they were but they didn’t know and I didn’t do my homework as well so we didn’t shoot . They found out later that teal were in season . So know the regulations and bag limits for each Duck specie .

If you go back to the main waterfowl menu, there is a post on 9-5-24 “new to waterfowl” that has a lot of good info. A pair of waders, a shotgun, a half dozen decoys and you can be dangerous. As long as you have birds coming in your spot. Birds normally want to land into the wind, but also want to be on the calm spot of the water. Watch birds coming in without expecting a lot and see where they want to be. Then set up there. Above all, just enjoy your time outside and watching Gods creation.

I should say some good info, maybe not lots. There are other older posts along the same lines.

I’m not looking to start it till next year just looking to learn until then. I have access to two small boats a 10’ semi v and a 12’ flat bottom, I have a pair of waders some calls and 4-5 goose decoys that my ex brother in law gave me a few years back. I had a guy that lived near me offer to get me started if I got him started on deer hunting and that’s what got my interest going but he has sense moved to a different state

Here is reason why you should find another hunting adventure other than waterfowl hunting. KANKAKEE FISH AND WILDLIFE area has historically been known as a destination for excellent waterfowl hunting however in the past few years migrations routes have changed and so have the results.
At one time there were more than a dozen duck clubs around that area and now there are only 3 still hanging on. Membership to these clubs is ultra expensive and results are just so so.
This is a photo of this years hunting results posted weekly at KANKAKEE, the harvest rate is less than 1/2 a duck per hunter.
Now factor in the cost of gas, equipment and time spent.

This is my first year of really getting invested in waterfowl. It's tough finding spots. I have been fortunate enough to get a good group of guys to mentor me.
But, if you're wanting to do it then I say get with some buddies who waterfowl hunt, as you previously did, and try to soak up as much info as you can.
Best of luck to you!
