What would cause this? 5 right by each other. Another one 20 yards away.

That’s pretty odd. No puncture wounds or anything?

Middle of the woods by an old stream. Stream is dry and the area is muddy. No puncture wounds and IDK where they'd get antifreeze.

My money is on poison or they drank the last of the stagnant water in the stream.

That close together I say the Fly bait drink. Either they ate/drank something toxic close by or someone collected them and dumped them there.

Maybe someone trapped them and dumped them there?

May never know but, conservation came and collected 2 of them for the State Biologist. They're taking them to Purdue for testing.

EHD is Possible with raccoons. I learned this some years ago from Dean Zimmerman, DNR wildlife biologist/Purdue. Apparently a bit more rare. And I would not think it would be the case here with them dying in such close proximity. It will be interesting to see the outcome.

Some people use Golden Mairin (spelling?) fly bait in their barns and it pretty much kills everything real quick. Possibly someone cleaned the barn of varmints then tossed them out there.
Will also add that coons in Indiana are now extremely overpopulated since the value of fur is zero and very few hunt or trap them anymore. When populations get so high like this, mother nature often steps in with a disease that hits them hard and significantly reduces numbers.
I trap a bunch every year just to try to keep the numbers in check. They are real hard on ground nesting birds of any type.

Definitely no love loss between raccoons and myself. Just curious if there's something more to be concerned with is all.
