At first I really wasn't too interested and then I got this rifle in my hands. It's a Savage A22. The more I shouldered it, the more I liked it. So I did the deal. It comes with a Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35 scope, Boyd's laminate thumbhole stock and extra magazine. The fella wanted to unload it because it just "Jams all the time!" I don't know what that means yet but I'll find out. If I end up with a single shot rifle with all the rest, I'll be happy for what I have in it! And I figure I'll gamble on Savage or Vortex making things right (even if I have to pay) if I find issues that I'm not able to correct!

I took a little lunch break and decided to break the rifle down. Got some parts sprayed with Break-Free and I'll commence to some cleaning later.

Probably just needs a good cleaning and the right ammo. Let us know.

They don't like the low velocity rounds. But they are know for very good accuracy. Good luck.

The first thing I checked was the barrel and it was bright and clear as a shiny mirror. Then I donned my headlamp so I could see a little better. Ok, then! Very dirty. And this can't be good! After some deeper cleaning and scrubbing, I noticed this burr along the rail. It was so pronounced that it must have picked up the lint from the previous owners cleaning swab. I did some very careful and light filing to smooth out that area. I never fired the gun before starting this process. However, I did try to cycle a magazine of 5 rounds and every round was a failure to feed, denting the rounds in the process. Based on your comment salty, I'll start with some CCI Mini-Mag copper plated, 40 grain, 1235 fps and see what happens.

I was able to shoot the rifle today. I shot 3 mags. The results were pretty good. But I've still got some issues. The last round of the first 2 magazines was a failure to feed. The second to last round of the third magazine was a failure to feed. I guess I could call that a 90% improvement. I think I will break the gun down again and look for other issues. Probably do a little more cleaning.
My thoughts: I love how the rifle shoulders. Thumbhole stock is really sweet. Scope is great. Shooting freehand out to 25 yards, the groups were less that 1 inch. That's pretty accurate for me. The extra magazine that came with the rifle is junk. I couldn't even insert the magazine into the rifle as it looked like it had been beat and warped for some reason. So, I could only work with the one magazine. For those pretty familiar with the A22, the magazine is not a good solid fit into the well. It's very sloppy. I mean I can move it up and down close to 1/8 inch. Is this normal? Should I be looking to try a new magazine? With the failure to feed being the last round or 2, could this be indicative of a bad or worn magazine? I would think CCI Mini-Mag would be decent ammo. Any other ammo suggestions? The trigger was a lot heavier pull than I expected. I would guess it to be at least 5 lbs or more. My buddy has borrowed my scale. I will have to check the trigger pull when I get it back.

As for ammo, I really, really like standard velocity 40g lead bullet CCI Blazer ammo. It's been really accurate in the different 22's that I've used it in, and no failures. Yes, the sloppy mag might be the issue, and it might be a weak spring in the mag seeing that it was the last shot or 2 that have been giving you issues. Are they factory mags or aftermarket? I would absolutely look for a new factory mag. I don't know if this is a good or bad price, but if they are here then they ARE available. A22 Mag ebay

That looks like a Ruger 10-22 rotary magazine. If so, I'd try a couple other magazines and also look for any changes in the way the magazine fits and function.
Those old ones may have got some help they didn't need when someone started having problems.

HC I talked to a couple of gun buds, both of them recommended to check the magazine while it is in the mag well. I guess they have issues with the rear of the mag sagging down and not letting the mag stay horizontal in the well. I did see a video showing this issue and how the guy fix it, but it was for the B 22 (bolt). Dont know if the same issue is on the A 22. I will look for the video.

I picked up a new magazine from Top Gun in Terre Haute last week. I also broke the gun down again and spent a little more time smoothing out the burr on the side rail with a polishing stone. As I slowly worked the action I began to "feel" the bolt catching slighlty at the burr area. I kept polishing until the bolt slid smooth as butter. Just a tad of whale oil and she runs great. I shot a box of American Eagle, 40 gr solid, splitting between the old and new magazines. The new magazine ran 25 rounds flawlessly. The old magazine gave me 1 failure to feed. I'll probably disassemble the old one someday to check it out and clean it. I still think the trigger pull is quite high. I'll check that when I get my scale back. For now, I'm very happy with the way the gun functions. And for accuracy, BAM! This rifle rocks!
