Do your homework ask a lot of questions and get everything in writing.
When our group lost our good friend and Captain in Ludington Michigan a few years ago I had to go on the hunt to find a suitable replacement.
We decided to try and find an equally good fishing area closer to home so we settled on St Joe Michigan which is 45 mins from our houses and has a good reputation as a hot spot on Lake Michigan.
I spent a day reviewing web sites and taking notes, I then made numerous calls and asked a whole lot of questions.
A big factor for us was the boat, how big how old.
I ask is your web site up to date?
I ask are your prices current?
I ask about fish cleaning?
And I ask about payment?
I settled on IN THE BOX as our choice for the following reasons.
His web site is current, his information is regularly updated and when you signup for a trip he uses a contract type agreement that you printout you also put down a deposit (through PAY-PAL) and receive an immediate receipt, a printout of the contract and 24 hours before your trip you get a notice on your phone reminding you that you are fishing tomorrow.
On the web site for IN THE BOX it says "NO FISH NO PAY" your trip is free.
A bold statement to make is that if you don't catch a fish you trip is free...in eight years of chartering Jarrod has never given away a free trip.
We like to and the Captain enjoys the final payment being made in cash.
Our group doesn't drink aboard the boat because it just makes for a better day we do however have a few after we get done helping with the fish cleaning process.
Remember this: TIP LARGE.
As we were toasting our last day of fishing Captain Jarrod said that the day I called him he thought he was being interrogated the way I asked questions.
When we fish aboard his boat it's like we are fishing with an old friend.
Captain Jarrod is 33 years old and owns 4 different boats, he fishes all year long on both lake Michigan in the summer and the St Joe river in the winter for Steelhead and Walleye.
He is married and his wife runs a party pontoon boat where you bring your own drinks and you peddle as this boat goes up and down a river for a couple hours.
