Text for the Day -- Matthew 9:35-36, 10:1, 5-8 ---------- Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ‘Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.” Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.’
Devotional ---------- Clearly, healing was a significant part of Jesus' public ministry. Moved by compassion he ministered healing and deliverance where ever he went. He laid down a pattern of preaching, teaching and healing as a way to bring the kingdom of God to people. He sent his original disciples out to minister in the same way. He calls us today to be aware of this same pattern in our ministry to the world we live in today. We are called to take our discipleship seriously so that we can make a difference in this world according to God's purposes. Speak your witness, share your learning and pray for healing.
Prayer -------- Gracious God, stir my heart to listen, speak and pray as a disciple of the kingdom of God. Amen
