The opening dates of fall hunting seasons are only a few weeks off, and sportsmen can sharpen their shooting, waterfowl-calling and ATV-driving skills while checking out some of the latest hunting merchandise this weekend at the Kentucky Outdoors Expo's Fall Whitetails and Waterfowl Classic at the Union County Fair and Expo Center at Sturgis.
Among the featured events at the Outdoors Expo are:
· An ATV ride-and-drive track sponsored by Arctic Cat, John Deere, Kawasaki and Kubota, where people can try out the off-road vehicles.
· A shotgun test range sponsored by Benelli.
· ATV mud bogs, where people can bring their own ATVs and compete for cash prizes.
· A Big Buck Contest, where attendees can bring their trophy mounts and compete for prizes, as well as gain free admission to the Expo.
· Waterfowl calling contests with cash prizes to be awarded.
· Dog-training exhibitions and hunting dog evaluations conducted by the Tri-State Retrievers Club at a lake on the fairgrounds.
Educational seminars will also be conducted on hunter safety, God's Outdoors Disciples will sponsor archery, air-gun shooting and educational sessions for youths and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will have its education bus, a shooting simulator and personnel on hand to answer questions about wildlife. Vendors offering products and services including ATVs, boats, lawn and garden equipment and consumer products will fill the 60,000-square foot air-conditioned John Arnold Arena. Outdoor gear supplier Gander Mountain will sponsor three waterfowl calling contests. The Kentucky State Goose Calling Championship and the West Kentucky Open Goose Calling Championship takes place Saturday. The winner of West Kentucky Open, which draws competitors from several states, will receive $1,000. A West Kentucky Hunter Style Duck Calling contest will be held at noon Sunday with $500 awarded for first place. Junior division competition will be held in both goose and duck contests. Entry fees are $50 in both the goose and duck adult divisions and $10 in the junior. The ATV mud bogs take place at 1 p.m. Saturday in pits in the infield of the fairgrounds racetrack. This is the second year for the fall Outdoors Expo. A spring Expo geared toward fishing and turkey hunting was conducted in March. It attracted about 1,700 sportsmen, said Expo Center director Rodman Meacham. Admission to the Outdoors Expo is $5 for adults with children under 12 admitted free. Gates open at 9 a.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
