The Indiana Sportsmens Roundtable held a meeting this morning to receive an update from DNR about the latest news. Following are some of my notes from that meeting.
1. Colonel Steve Hunter updated us on the status of the Law Enforcement Division. When the current recruit class takes the field they will be at full strength since the early 2000's. Currently they have 24 vacant positions; many will be filled with this current class.
2. Law Enforcement is currently testing body cams. This will prove very beneficial to the officers.
3. Joe Caudill updated us on the current status of CWD in Indiana. They had the one positive hit in Lagrange County and are monitoring closely the situation up there. Oklahoma is releasing CWD-resistant deer into the wild. There are some slides they will send us, and I will post when they get here. Basically, they have discovered a gene that is resistant to the CWD. Still no live test. Current DNR plan is increased monitoring right now.
4. There is going to be a new point of sale program coming online in December 2024. There will be increased customer service in the new system. Also, there will be increased interest in retention and recruitment of hunters and fishermen.
5. Still $9,100,000 in the Lifetime License Fund. The new system shouldn't need any investment like the last one.
6. Long session (budget) of legislature this year. The otter, deer and carp proposals are done.
7. The Bobcat rule is in the works. It should take effect in the Fall of 2025. DNR will need our support at public comment meetings to stave off the Cat-huggers. The Rule will target specific counties but will be state-wide. There will be a quota both statewide and individual. It will be trapping only. DNR stressed this is their proposal being submitted and what is being currently proposed may not be the final product, so everyone needs to comment or attend the public meetings.

To comment on proposed rules (deer, otter and civil penalties) go to www.in.gov/nrc/rules/rulemaking-docket/ and scroll to the rule you wish to comment on. HatchetJack P.S. The T.I.P. program (Turn In a Poacher) is currently looking to fill several board positions. Contact me if interested.

(5) remove the restriction on using an infrared detector to retrieve a deer. Allows individuals to use infrared detectors to find dead deer; with newer technology and the use of drones, individuals could more easily retrieve a dead deer; this is consistent with the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in IC 14-22-6-16 and the use of dogs and horses to help retrieve dead deer in 312 IAC 9-3-2.

Jack, Elaborate on #5 please.. Thanks.. There was some concern that DNR might use the remaining Lifetime License money for the new computer system. We were told they did not have to touch it so we still have over $9M in that fund. Jack
