Long Story so get a beer and follow along.
Our group just returned from one of our bi-annual 2 day fishing trips with our friend and charter Captain BOB HAYNER aboard the EAGLE EYE CHATERS out of Marblehead Ohio.

On Tuesday the wind was rough the waves were rocken and rollin and the air was pretty chilly.
The Bite was slow but we ended up with 30 I believe.
THI IS WHERE IT GETS UGLY.
PROBLEM #1 :The night before our Captain got a hot tip from one of the other boats in their little click about a possible HOT SPOT up near the Canadian border so we left the dock at 6:00 am made the 45 min run to Canada and attempted to locate this HOT SPOT.
We wasted 1 1/2 hours searching but were unable to find the treasure so we headed back to where we came from and set our gear east of Put in Bay Island and started fishing.
We caught 1 fish when the phone rings and one of the other boats had found a real active Hot Spot and so we picked up our gear to set course for this new spot.
PROBLEM #2 : When we went to start our Port side engine it wouldn't fire, just a week or so earlier Bob replaced an $1100.00 fuel pump on that engine a couple days later it blew a relay fuse so Bob replaced it but if you know Bob he always believes in being prepared so he had a spare one onboard and our First Mate was able to replace it and off we we go again.
After a 30min run we are again setting our gear on real good marks and the fish are starting to roll in.
PROBLEM #3 : About 45 mins into really good fishing a boat is quickly approaching us from our Port side (LEFT) and they are not paying attention despite us blowing our air horn, yelling and screaming and waving our arms.
On our Starboard side (RIGHT) is a large floating log so we cannot make an evasive move and the other boat suddenly realizes they are about to run over our equipment...but it's to late.
They ran over our main line leading to the BIG planner board and got it wrapped around their prop and now they are pulling us sideways and they pulled our board under their boat so we tell them to cut the main line which releases us and allows us to begin salvaging and assessing our damage.
In addition to the mess that was going on with the boat that ran us over our lines on the other side ran across that log I had mentioned earlier and it began braking lines on that side of the boat.
The other boat freed our now broken planner board and we were able to motor over to it and make recovery.
After all was said and done we lost about 10 very expensive Lures, we lost 16 leaders and whole bunch of line but worst of all our planner board was trashed as well as one brand new $240 dollar reel.
Despite all of this Bob and and his first mate began working on getting us back in the game.
Captain Bob's boat is a combination of an ACE HARDWARE store and a BASS PRO store all in one.
They broke out a battery powered drill, tools and needed hardware to begin dismantling the board, repairing and replacing the broken parts while our group got to work untangling ,restringing and tying on new tackle.
It took us about an hour and half to get everything ready again.
Now at this point in the game I would have not had a problem if Captain Bob wanted to call it a day BUT NOT BOB!
We got our gear back in the water and it was game on again and the fishing was good until.........
PRBLEM #4 : About every hour Bob will switch engines to keep the hours balanced on them so he went to start our finicky engine from the morning and you can probably guess the next sentence.
The engine wouldn't start and now we have run out of spare parts SOOO we need to get towed in because you just can't maneuver a boat this size on one engine in addition the wind is beginning to build so we had to wait for TowBoatUS to come out and tow us back to port.
The ride back was about 1 1/2 hours traveling at a speed of 2 miles per hour.
We got the boat back to our slip and with the help of numerous other Captains we were able to get the boat back in it's slip.
Did we catch fish you ask? well ...we had caught 29 walleyes so the total accumulated weight for the 2 days was 161 pounds at the fish cleaning place.
We had a great fish fry at The Crows Nest restaurant and laughed the day off with a few cocktails.
We cut cards for the cheeks and wings and Schall53 finally won some cheeks but during the packing one of the new guys put Schall53's cheeks in my cooler ...they were good ...better luck next time.
The Captain of the other boat looked up Bob's boats name on google found his telephone # he called Bob to apologize
and asked Bob for a total loss list and cost for replacement so he is going to make good on the damage.
I have been fishing with Bob for 17 years this year doing multiple trips a year and we never had a day from hell LIKE THIS.
In case you were wondering they were able to trace the engine problem to a faulty wiring harness for the fuel pump that Bob just had replaced.
And whose fault was the incident on the water with the other boat WE WERE CLEARLY IN THE RIGHT OF WAY.
And why did we get so close to that log because it was what they call a DEAD HEAD meaning only an end was barely sticking out of the water making it nearly impossible to see and impossible to determine how big it is.
