I had to send back a Mossberg Maverick 88 I bought because it would not eject shells after firing. The slide would not move. Apparently this is not unusual. The barrel end where the shell fits is not machined quite enough and the brass swells during detonation just enough to jam it. It has gone back to Mossberg, and when it comes back I will check it out.
An interesting note - I checked on which shotguns are made in America. I was really surprised. Winchester, Remington, all the old favorites are made elsewhere. Mossberg is still US made. Uncle Sam is giving me a good bit of my money back so I think I will trade up.

The Mavericks are assembled in Texas but have a good number of parts made in Mexico....which is why they are so cheap and don't have quite the fit and finish of the 500s or 590s. That being said I still think they are a good value. The 590s are just plain great as far as pumps go. It is amazing how many folks don't realize that a LOT of "American" guns are not made here. For instance, folks don't get that FN Herstal owns Browning and Winchester and (depending on the line) the guns are built in Portugal, Japan and Turkey. My buddy insisted his Xbolt was built in the US until I had him roll over the barrel and read the Miroku- Japan stamp. Not that it is a bad thing, just how it is. The other side of the coin is that a bunch of European manufacturers (especially handguns) either have or are building guns at plants in the US (Beretta, Glock, Sig, FN etc).

Italy, Belgium and Japan have/had good gun makers.
Italy- Benelli, Perazzi, Beretta, Caesar Guerini, Fabbri Germany- Kreighoff, Blaser Japan - Browning, Winchester
I'm sure that there are other brands that are great that I'm forgetting.

I will see how it works when it comes back. My LGS said they have seen this before. Basically I like it though. Especially for $200. If I trade up it will be for the Mossberg 500 or a Benelli. I cant really get around to hunt anymore much, but I love to go to spot shoots.
Some guys have addressed the barrel problem with steel wool or emery cloth, but I feel better having the factory do it.

I have a Benelli Nova and LOVE it. Slicker than cat snot and I have killed everything from quail to deer with it. The one warning I would give is that if you think you want extra barrels (ie rifled) they are nearly as much as the guns themselves.

Rural King has the Benelli Nova with the long field barrel - 28" I think- for $399. That is better than I have seen anywhere. .12 or .20.
I might have to jump on that

I dunno - I looked hard and the Nova seems to be $449 everywhere else. A good buy either way...

I would love to have my 870 Express back. It was a Christmas present from my wife and then was stolen.

Got my Maverick back, and on the spot traded it for a Winchester Black Shadow SXP

I shot my new Winchester SXP yesterday for the first time. What a difference from the Maverick 88! Another guy at the shoot had a Maverick 88 and was complaining about problems with it.
I guess you get what you pay for...

I hate they are hurting their reputation by churning out inferior value guns. One thing about a 500, you could count on them to work. My 500 is one of the guns in my possession that I wouldn't part with.

I'm still looking for a 12g barrel for mine. AFAIK, Mossberg 500 barrels will fit the Maverick 88, as long as the Maverick has a barrel that is at least 18.5 inches long. Mossberg 500 barrels are all over Ebay.

Come to think of it, I have a 500 barrel. 28" I think, no rib, plain front bead. Fixed choke so won't take choke tubes, either modified or improved cylinder, not sure which. I will never use it again, so you can have it if you like.
PM me know if you're interested.
