I'm getting ready to head out on my last goose hunt of the season. It'll be my first hunt on my new ground. I'm not overly optimistic due to the fact that I will be going solo with no decoys, calls and very little experience. I had a friend lined up to go with but, I woke up to a text message from him at 3:30 this morning stating he couldn't make it due to a work call out.
I did go back to the property last night. The river runs through the back end of it and there's some flooded timber. I was hesitant to sneak in too close but, I was close enough to hear some chatter in there. I also got to watch a couple lock up and drop into the timber.
My game plan is to slowly slip in and let their chatter guide me where I need to go. I'll be standing in the water and will have a couple hooks with me to hang my bag and gun.
At the end of the day, if I don't so much as fire a shot, I'm certain I'll be content in just watching God's creation doing what He's designed them to do.
Good luck to anyone and all getting out.
Hunt safe and God bless!

Congratulations, that's awesome! How did it go down? Did they come in to land in the flooded timber?

The first one was in a 4 pack that got up down the river and flew past me. The second two was a group that was coming to land on the river. Both those birds fell right in the river and let me tell ya, that was a chore for this old fat guy to fetch them out. Good thing there were some nice long sticks to help with that.
About 15 minutes before legal shooting time, I had them floating past me and dropping in. I thought for sure my hunt was going to be a quick one. 5 mint before legal, a 6 pack flew over and almost emptied out the timber. They all got up and flew off. Thankfully, a few stuck around and more flew by.
I think it's possible that I could have, or at least a more experienced waterfowler, git a limit. I let several fly over that were just a tad bit out of my comfort zone. I told myself that I was not going shoot over the tree line and there were several flocks just above it.
I think I landed a good place here. Property owner met me when I was leaving and asked me if he could've one of the birds. I offered him all three but, he just took the one. He also offered to let me build a blind out there if I wanted too. But, to be quite honest, I loved hunting the way I did today. Just tucked in between some trees. We'll see what future holds I guess.
I was definitely thinking that if those flocks that flew over just above the trees had some decoys to look at or a call to hear, maybe they would have dropped in or at least lower.

I thought I was in a good spot when I found this old platform out there.

Blinds are nice but being flexible and mobile is equally important.
You have figured out a big part of the equation...find where birds are and hide.
Decoys and calls and dogs all flare birds from time to time. Hide well and call sparingly goes a long way.
Your spot looks awesome

I'd ask the property owner if he would come out with you if you built a blind. Even if he didn't hunt I'm sure if he used to hunt he'd like to be out. Maybe he could call?

If you are on the "X", the birds will come. If you aren't on the "X", it might be hard to pull the birds away.
Next thing you know you will be talking to budd about a lab.

The property owner has a hard time getting around. But, I did tell him that exact thing this morning. I'd help him get out there anytime.
