Well, as I mentioned in another post. I'm planning on getting back in April to do a little work, should at least get two weekends and after work every day while there. Our land is only 20ac, but besides the cabin area and walnut grove (maybe 3/4 of an acre), it's all Woods. I'd like to get in a couple food plots, I want to move my tree stand to a different location. Maybe even start building a blind there. I want to get a couple good food plots going, but I guess I will have to get a soil test done for that. I'd also like to get some chestnut trees planted. We have a walnut grove that IU started about 40 years ago, but they never came back to do anything else, they probably planted at least 70 trees. Some of those trees never took off and are only about 4-6 inches, so I want to get rid of those, maybe even half of them. It would give me room for the chestnut trees. There is an area in the back of the property I would like to start thinning out. My pop had some of the land logged about 15 years ago. The floor is covered in saplings that most probably need to be taken out. Want to hinge cut some trees back in that area and maybe get another tree stand put up. Those are my plans at least, with my time getting back there, don't know what I will actually be able to get done. Have a good off-season gents, as I always say, I live through home with your posts...SF Woody

Great plan sounds like. I’ve continued to cut larger cottonwood trees on my place. Water is up from the river so can’t easily access everywhere for about a month. Hopefully begin selective harvesting after that. Hopefully get some real good bedding established.. depending on how the logging goes I may add another food plot but will definitely open up the existing plots to maximize mmtheir potential.

I cleared some dirt right before dark so tomorrow morning I will be planting a 15' wide x 500' patch of Big Rock Switchgrass, and another patch that is 5' wide x 350' long of the same stuff. Trying to shield the field and food plot from the road.
I had brush hogged and disked/smoothed that area last Spring and I hit it 4x last year with Glyphosate, so hopefully there won't be many seeds left to sprout this Spring. I will mark a 3' test row with flags so I can see when it pops up. I will hit the area with 2,4-D if I see broadleaf weeds popping up before the Switchgrass breaks the surface.

Frost seeded the food plot with more clover/chicory mix. Cut more cottonwoods in another bedding area build. Just started hinge cutting a little bit as well.
Planning on building a couple blind platforms as well. Got the areas laid out. Will probably order material in a week or so.
Neighbor asked me about using the old garden area. We’re going to just work together and make it happen. Probably a 30’x30’ area. He pulled the posts and fence. Then used his machine to pull the smaller trees. I tilled it up real good. Now he’s getting the posts and fencing back.
Lastly took some soil samples and will send those off tomorrow.

Probably shame on me for not doing it last year but did do plot start last year as well as aggressively went after the weeds prior to planting.
After getting good growth I did some plot boost and mowed it high to try and keep any weed growth down.
For year one I was happy with the growth

Walnuts give off a chemical that inhibits other trees from growing nearby. I honestly don't know how far away you have to plant new, different trees. Any tree planted really shouldn't be under the canopy of another tree. Maybe Purdue extension office or someone on here knows?

Thanks, hadn't thought about that, I was just gonna cut and get rid of the ones on the north end and plant those. Hopefully someone will be able to chime in about a distance. And also, if I should wait to plant a couple years after removing those? I tried a plot out there couple years ago, didn't turn out to well. That may have been the reason? Grass grows good though. Thanks again, SF Woody
