As some of you may remember, my mother passed away about a year and a half ago. Prior to her passing she gave away some of her possessions to family. One of these possessions was a pair of silver earrings that she had given my niece. Now my niece has been through just about every hardship you can imagine from health issues with her sons, we almost lost one of her sons to a severe allergic reaction. We almost lost her to the same allergy last fall. They are acutely allergic to certain foods and ingredients. The one that got past them this fall came by surprise, a restaurant they had eaten at before had changed part of it's recipe and the change was so minor no one would even think of this being an issue.
Now, here's the kick in the gut for her and her family. 2 years ago her husband who is about 30 years old was diagnosed with ALS. He was feeling some tingling in his right arm and couldn't figure out what was going on, he saw doctors, took tests, and eventually ended up at IU and they told him he had ALS. Frank (my niese's husband) went from a HEALTHY, strong, fit, 250 to now being skin and bones in a wheelchair. He has not given up and will not give up but has taken a beating from this disease.
This brings me to the story at hand. The company Frank and I both work for got tickets to the University of Southern Indiana basketball game, they were given a suite and in turn gave the suite to Frank so he and his family and guests could enjoy the game, easy access, plenty of room to spread out and we could all keep an eye on my Great Nephews. I took the next day (today) off, I didn't feel like finishing the game at 10:30 and going to work at 5:30 the next day. Here's where the story starts to come together, my niece was wearing my mother's earrings that evening, when she got home she had realized that one was lost. She told my sister with tears in her eyes that she had lost one (my sister had gone over to help get the boys to bed). My sister called me this morning to tell me what had happened. My wife and I dropped kids off at three different schools and went back to USI to investigate. I asked one of the cleaning crew if we could check the suite, he said sure but I just cleaned it, I said I'd like to try anyway. I looked and looked like I was looking for blood on the trail of a buck, no luck. The cleaning guy asked if I wanted the vacuum bag, I said sure, not holding out much hope. I had some errands to run today and my last one was to lock up my kid's grade school and church. I got home and thought I'd give the vacuum bag a shot. First pile out was a bunch of popcorn, got excited about something shiny, turned out to be a safety pin. Sifted through some more and nothing. I dumped some more out and still nothing. I cut a larger hole in the bag and dumped the rest out. Low and behold there it was! Bent but not broken probably repairable and in MY hand! God is good!
