I follow a trapping form but do not trap. I am wondering what is the benefit in dying traps. I know some take new traps let them rust then die it then wax them. If you wax them to keep them from rusting why let them rust to start with. If the wax is to cover sent won't the wax pick up sent any way. Why not just just set the trap "out of the boxes to speak. I do know that most that set traps in water do not do all this dying waxing stuff. What is the difference.i have set a couple traps in the back yard to get problem coon and ground hogs but never went thru all the prep thoes guys do and got my critters.. was I luckey? I have very little knowledge on trapping and any information will be appreciated.

This is a question with several answers. The reason for dying traps was originally for camouflage and somewhat rust prevention. Wax is for speeding up the action, rust protection and odor control. The reason for purposely rusting new traps is because they won't take dye with factory oil and shine. Now days, some guys still dye and wax, some use cold dips and some simply paint traps and leave them outside for a while before setting. I switched to cold dipping in the spring/summer then letting them soak in the creek for a few days in the fall, then just leave them hanging outside until I use them. Life/family has ended my trapping from about 15 years ago until about 4 years from now. I still look at them hanging in the building and say "we're going to be in business in a few years", LOL. The trapping bug never goes away.

You want new traps that usually have a coating of oil to get a slight coating of rust . It helps the dye to stick to the traps better when boiling traps. Wax is more for preserving the traps. It keeps them from rusting. I have pretty well gone to speed dip instead of boiling and waxing. Trapping coons, mink, muskrat , etc. traps don't need it just mainly K-9 traps. Some guys take flat black paint and thin it out with mineral spirits and dip their traps in this and let them dry and air out well before the season
