1st - I didn't get hurt, but my right side was sore for a week. I was installing my ladder stand as mentioned on that Friday and I was putting it in a cedar tree. I decided to bring my little giant ladder and cut all the cedar tree branches before putting up the ladder stand. Taking my time and thinking this is the best way to clear the a path up the cedar for the ladder stand.
I set the little giant ladder up and all was good. I was at the top of the ladder at 15 feet and just finished cutting the last branch. This cedar had a bunch of those little branches. Half of them dead branches. I had already thrown down the hand saw and ready to had back down the ladder. All of the sudden the ladder moved to the left and off the trunk of the tree and resting on one small branch. I looked down to the base of the ladder and the left leg foot was gone. I move down the right side of the ladder as it and I fell. This all happened in a second or two. I quickly pushed off the tree to the right as I fell and the ladder to the left. I was able to fall more on my right side verses landing on my legs. Somewhere around 13-15 feet. I know I was down one step of the ladder as I fell. From the impact I almost blacked out, but talked to myself not to. It knock the breath out of me for a minute. I then tried to stand up, but that wasn't happening yet. I was able to sit for about 20 minutes against a tree. I then got up and made sure I was okay etc.
I looked at the ladder and the whole 1st step was in the ground and deeper on the left side. It appears the ground was only a few inches thick with a cavity under the ground. I didn't look that close. So the ladder broke through the ground into a hole.
My guess after another ten minutes or so I pulled the little giant ladder out of the hole and walked out. I left the ladder stand, straps and everything else there. It's still there and not sure when I go back to finish getting the ladder stand up.
I hurt my right side lung area a little it. I landed on one of my racketing straps laying on the ground. I was on top of a ridge and on flat ground. I had no clue the ground had a void under it.
I was lucky I didn't land on anything else and or break any bones. No cuts or broken bones. Just a bruised side.
