Lot 2260 | 1853 Purdey 14 Ga. Side By Side Percussion Shotgun This lot got my attention! I hope the winning bidder appreciates it. I have watched a lot of auctions but this is the first Purdy I have seen. Does anyone know where I might get a set of Tweeds to go with it? Size 4xl? I might have to give driven Grouse a go. You saw that too ![huh](https://www.ingunowners.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif) ? I gave it a thought but then getting another gauge just means I have to get components, try and find reloading dies, etc., etc. I have 12, 16 and 20 here now. The 16 is an odd duck, at least for me. The shotgun was made by Chris V. Schilling in Suhl, Germany. Kraft sold it as a percussion 20 ga, and something looked a bit odd about it to me. Besides it NOT being a percussion gun (even though the hammers look like they hit a percussion cap) - they just hit a nipple looking thing that transfers the energy to a firing pin. It DOES have Damascus barrels though. When I got it home I dropped a 20 ga hull in the chamber and when it disappeared about 2" down the barrel I had to look closer. It's a 16 ga. The plan is to load up safe smokeless loads to shoot Sporting Clays with it, so in keeping with the period I just had to order 125 brass shotshells for it along with the components. Then a month later I got to looking at the hulls and they take rifle or pistol primers. Oops, now how will I prime and deprime them? I found that RCBS offers a 16 ga shell holder. No need to look very hard. They should have everything you need here - AND they offer tailoring to boot. shop.purdey.com/collections/view-all-mens-clothingI did some research on the 14 ga. Here's what I found: www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/195/1/WAD-14-C

Flintlocks Inc in Nineveh has the wads. Muzzle Loader so no dies or cases. It is hard to believe that all of the original buyer info is there still but then it is a Purdy.
I used to go to Drakes site quite a bit just to view the bespoke English guns.
I hope they show the price realized.

They will after the auction is over, but the price they show is without the buyers premium, so figure in 20% on top of the price.

There were some minor issues with this gun. Somewhere is it's almost twin. Looking at the G. de Rothschid on the ledger there is a second gun listed. The barrels and stock do not match so at some point in time there was a pair and the barrels were switched. When you had the Rothschid's kind of money you could afford a loader so you could shoot more. I have seen sets that had grip safety's. The loader would load and have the gun cocked, capped or primed for the shooter. Pass off and repeat. There is a good chance there is/was a nice fitted case for the pair including turn screws, powder flasks, measures, shot flasks, wads and wad punch. Every thing needed to load and maintain the pair. I noticed the left platinum vent was plugged with a bit of gold, the right was not. Maybe it was spitting a bit and someone had it plugged. The griprail was broken and soldered back together. I doubt these had much effect on the final price except for the numbers. 2 Marlin 39As went for $550 about 2-300 less than I would have expected. At the end there was a nice MLtarget rifle complete with the false muzzle. They listed it with a non working scope. It is too bad these old rifles get separated from their molds and tools.

I agree, there are things at auctions that should be kept together, but I bet that when the estate is gone through, people with no knowledge of things toss stuff that should be kept together.

As far as ammo, there were some good deals on 222 Remington. It's getting hard to find.
