Text for the Day -- Luke 2:8-15 ---------- In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!’
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’
Devotional ---------- Jesus quietly slips into the world in a stable, with a manger as a bed. Few in Bethlehem that night were aware of that birth. But, it is announced somewhere. That somewhere was a pasture outside Bethlehem.
The angels revealed to the shepherds what had taken place and what it meant. Good News is born - a Savior who is the Messiah. The Good News announcement went from the angels to the shepherds and then to the world. The telling-process is still going on to this day.
Prayer -------- Use me as a voice of the Good News, Lord. Amen

It's a tradition that goes back generations in my Mennonite heritage. Before opening gifts, someone (usually the patriarch) reads the Christmas story from Luke chapter 2. This year, I elected my oldest grandson to read the scripture. The youngest of the 4 of my grandsons in the pic (feasting on Grandma's Italian Deer) gave a little resistance with the suggestion that we skip the reading this year: ![](https://i.imgur.com/CZwia78.jpg) To which I replied, "Ok, buddy! Howz bout we call Papaw Steve (his other Grandpa, a Nazarene pastor) and talk to him about this?" And the young boy's retort was, "Well Papaw aint here!" That's when I reached for my phone..."So I think this Papaw will call your other Papaw!" And the tune quickly changed! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) It was all good. And I'm sure I had similar thoughts when I was his age! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!
