Try the Hoosier National Forest site. It is also known locally as Tucker Lake. Might try Youngs creek too. Also HNF.

Can't offer any info but a couple years ago, we were about 1 mile from the boat ramp and saw two twin-johnny-bucks in a field on the right side of the road right at daybreak.
Really impressive deer - I'd look into hunting that area.

Orange county has a large number of deer, some very nice bucks, and a good amount of public land. There are several tracts of HNF throughout the county and also Patoka lake property that should offer good hunting. Some good quality topo maps should have the boundaries of the HNF marked and give you some ideas on the terrain and the access. Hunting pressure varies greatly depending on the location and the time of year.
Note: Make sure you get an accurate topo as some maps show private land in the Hoosier National purchase area as being part of the HNF.

I've hunted Patoka on the Dubois side within just a few miles from Orange , and while I didn't see any bucks on that particular outing I saw more deer in one day than I had the previous few months combined . A hunter with a boat would do very well there .

Very, very well I would bet. Some areas are very difficult to get to without a boat.

air will rise up in the morning from the valley to the top and sink in the evening from the top to the bottom and carry scent with it. bucks will cruise along the top of ridges in the AM to catch any doe scent to see if shes in heat and cruise the bottoms in the evening as the air sinks to catch scent in the valleys. so its usually best to hunt toward the top of ridges in the AM and bottoms in the evenings during pre-rut and rut. h.h.

Kevin, Mbogo you both know there are no deer anywhere near Patoka. Although it's a rich spot , most of the deer I've seen there have been does . For a meat hunter it's a great spot . I didn't see a single buck the whole time I've hunted there , so I really can't reccomend the area .

I am going to have to go with Kevin & Mbogo. I would definatly stay away from Patoka, not worth the effort. Especially the first full weekend in Oct.
