Thanks.
Do you use the beetles to clean up your skulls? If not, how do YOU do it?

Yes I use the beatles. When you boil and bleach skulls in water it tends to break down the bone and causes them to split crack ect..and when someone is paying you thats what they dont want to see.. . I also Have a couple other tricks I do before I ever whiten them to insure a nice even white over the whole skull. I charge $125 for my Euro mounts but I can assure you when You get one from me the bone is solid not cooked and broken down and its White White White !!Not slamming you boilers. Just trying to explain why you really dont want to boil them!! Good Luck !! Dean

Well, I've got 3 I've done now, and they all still look great! My black bear skull (which is white) white, a wild boar skull (that I didn't want very white white), and now this buck skull (which I think turned out really well...... or at least I have no complaints!
The bear skull is holding up great and has been done since '97! The boar skull looks great and it has been done since '01...... I'm sure the buck will too!
Just seems like a LOT MORE work goes into a shoulder mount than a Euro...... but yet the Euro is still half the price of what you charge for a shoulder mount. Not slamming you taxi's, just trying to understand!

Well to break it down . I have about $70 in materials in a Deer Head with shipping if I do the tanning inhouse. Its takes about 4 to 5 hours from start to finish for a profit of $180. I have $35 in materials in a euro mount and 2 1/2 to 3 hours from start to finish with a profit of $90 so really it works out about the same. Hope this helps !! Dean

Oh to answer what Im sure will be the next question. " If it only takes 5 hours to mount a deer why does it take close to a year sometimes longer to get your deer back " Answer: Because you took it to someone besides Coal Hollow Taxidermy !! Just being Funny!! Have a good one !! Taxidermy Man

I'm a boiler ;D Although I won't say how little I charge, for you might get mad at all the buisiness I'd steal from ya It does offer the customer that "other" option of what to do with their trophy which is nice. The only problem I have with boiling is the older deer 4.5+ years. They seem to be more difficult because the muscles and tendons are more developed and more "stuck" to the bone. I like how white yours turned out. Very nice.

For those of you that are doing euro mounts for others "BE CAREFUL" This is something that falls under Taxidermy and you need to have a taxidermy License to perform Taxidermy for others. Along with the License you must Tag everything and also keep a Log book. You must also keep any and all records for 2 years. If you are caught doing Taxidermy for others without a License or not keeping good records it can cost you BIG $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Good Luck !! Dean

Woody, The answer is "NO" if you have someone elses deer working on it you better have a Taxidermy License or it can cost you big money!!!! And when the CO'S come looking they come in truck loads. And if anyone thinks they wont come looking just from hearing rumors think again. They stop by the shop all the time looking for deer they have just heard about. I think its a good thing and after all they are just doing there job. Good Luck!! Dean
