Confession time…
Rookie mistake.
When I saw the ten pointer I went to take the crossbow off of safety. It was already on Fire ! 😳. Quick look showed I did not cock it back far enough and the string was on the anti-dry fire lever. So here I am with the ten pointer crossing the valley, and I have to recock the bow. I pull the arrow out and of course I dropped it out by of the stand. I've got the AcuDraw Pro which is quiet cocking so I was able to get it recocked without alerting him and got an arrow in the bow. By that time he had completely crossed the valley heading south.
I'd died if he had come up by me and I could not recock and get the shot…

Do you think you'd have gotten him had the crossbow been ready? I'm completely new to crossbows, so I just crank on that Wicked Ridge until the safety pops out. I'm sure I've short-stroked a few 870 shotguns in my day. Lol!

Well, at least that sighting helped you correct an error without losing a shot opportunity. I'd call that a plus any day of the week. I'm hoping something more happens here before the wind velocity increases above my comfort zone.

I just glanced over at the logging road 20 yards to my left just in time to see a wagging deer tail walking into the brush away from me. No idea if it had been on that logging road and I'd missed seeing it.

I’ve been hunting with a crossbow for 22 years and that’s the first time doing that . In a hurry in the dark is my excuse. 😉

I am teaching Luke to visually look into that area, and confirm the nock is up against the string. On our Camx, you can see the anti dry fire flipped up to confirm the string is past it. So as long as you do a visual, that shouldnt happen. But we know how that goes! Lol. 😙

With this huge flurry of action lately, which started kinda early (3rd week of Oct), been wondering how the late start of gun season will be as far as buck movement? Yes, all bets are off on opening weekend with the orange army invading the woods, causing a lot of chaos and unnatural movement.

...been wondering how the late start of gun season will be as far as buck movement? I'm expecting a "blah" firearms season, as far as mature bucks are concerned.

I have scared a picked field only to scan back across and have a deer standing 60 yds in field. Had to pop out of the ground.

Not a bad morning....had 2 does by just after shooting light but no fellers following. Turkeys were talking like crazy right at daybreak and had a coyote by mid morning. Probably gonna stay out for 2-3 days until cooler temps prevail. Shoot straight guys!

Calling it a day.
My twin sister is celebrating her 20th year at the sheriff's department (dispatcher). They're having a cookout for her there so I'm going to go there for a bit and give the woods a rest. All day sit tomorrow!

I saw the weather and didn't go out. sustained 20 mph with gusts to 40 is no time to be in the woods with dead limbs around. Tomorrow morning will be calmer.
I think the late part of the gun season will be the start of the secondary rut. If not, then muzzleloader season should be good.

Slow morning- only one doe sighted.
Taking tonight off, will probably only hunt mornings the next few warm days. Got a lot of chores piling up anyway.

I think by the 18th most of the rut activity will be over and bucks trying to find the last one. So I think Saturday will be good and maybe Sunday morning, but after that very slow. Older bucks will bed and hide by Sunday mid morning. The last week getting into December might be a better time after the 19th.

I was focused straight ahead and just happened to look to my left and saw it going into the woods on the other side of the logging road. I'm convinced now that it came down the road, as just past where I saw it there is a side logging road n the right that angles back sharply. That deer simply cut the corner instead of turning at the intersection. EDIT: I called it quits for the day at noon. Came home and worked a very rare station (Yemen) on ham radio 45 minutes later. It's been a very long time (years) since anyone has been on the air in Yemen.

I thought back on the string in the anti-dry Fire lever.
I’ve literally cocked at least a thousand+ crossbows.. I ran the crossbow portion of the ACUSA Archery Camp. We usually had about 100 kids. Each kid shot a crossbow a dozen+ times. That’s 1,200 times for one camp with 4 of us doing the cocking. That’s 300 each and I participated in 5 camps. That’s 1,500 cocks not including my own. I have never pulled the stunt I did today!
It just goes to show you even us “pros” can screw up! 😉🤣
