Grandson from Chicago is coming in for the Thanksgiving weekend. He is bringing his fist born baby (June 23, 2023) and my 16th Great Grand Baby with him. Last year I felt bad (kinda) when I killed a nice buck out of the stand he would be hunting 5 days later on, so I'm staying home until Thanksgiving morning. Giving the stand a break for him. It will be nice sharing the deer woods with him again.

The farmer in the reduction zone called, he wants me to get my butt out there when the storm passes. He put in a new grain bin and put gravel over an acre of ground. If it is where I think it is, I can cover a LOT of the edge of the woods with the long range rifle from the shooting bench on the gravel area. That is if the wind cooperates. It takes me a few days on just one. I make my meat more clean than I probably need to but that's how I was taught. Someone brought in a truck load of 10 deer to the butcher here in Lafayette. Had to be a group effort though as it looked like a lot of bucks from the picture I saw.

Little bummed this morning. Neighbor down the road shot one of my 2 target bucks last evening and number 1 on my list for this year. Big ol 8 point that had broken his brow. I had passed the deer twice last year with a bow and he put on some mass this year. I seen him on the 4th this year but no shot and him on my cam as recently as thursday. Oh well. Next on the list is a 9 but havent seen from him in over 3 weeks. My son was out this morning seen 3 does. Said wind was pretty bad.

No does morning and two same small bucks. Well, my Indiana hunting is over. Last weeks of the year I'm moving the hang-on stand and putting up a new ladderstand that I still need to buy. The ladderstand is going where the cell trail camera is now and will retrieve then. I will put back next July. Good luck to all and congrats to all.
PS: This week is best time to see big bucks at home. Still bow in Ohio.

Went out at 7 this morning and nothing but the wind was moving. Sat in a double stand in a valley where I hardly ever see does. The birds didn't really get going until about 7:30, and it was 7:45 before the squirrels started chewing. Never saw them, just heard them. Otherwise quiet. About 8:15 I start hearing shots. There were at least 4 other hunters out in the area. Then about 8:45 I hear a loud crashing coming down the slope and across the creek. Ends up being a big doe and her fawn. They are very nervous and on high alert. Guessing they were probably among the deer getting shot at. They work their way towards me across the open grass, and make it within 30 yards. They appear to be starting to calm down. Took a chance at the older deer with my .50 muzzleloader, and I was hoping she would go down before she got to the creek. Nope. They crossed it and she made it all the way across the rest of the property! Shot occurred at 8:50, and after a weak blood trail and 250ish yards my Dad found her laying just yards off the property line. Can't believe she made it that far, the gun was dead on just behind her shoulder at 30 yards. She was hit hard enough that the bullet actually blew out some fat that I had to cut off!

So of course a couple weeks ago my son had a hunt in Arizona. That robbed me of a little over 2 weeks of archery season. Last week his girlfriend’s family invited us to have thanksgiving with them……his girlfriend lives in Louisiana. We leave Wednesday and won’t be back till Sunday. There’s goes some more days. And it’s raining now and supposed to tomorrow as well. I guess when late season comes around I better get something done.

Saved the best spot for last, 57 acres of unpressured family ground with a 2 1/2 acre woods with a small creek running the property. I've killed my last 2 bucks on this property the last 2 seasons and trying to make it 3 in row. Sitting in my 10 ft tripod looking over the back 3rd of the property and it's the only field that hasn't been tilled under In the area and the farmers combine isn't the most efficient because there's a lot of ears of corn laying around this field. So now we wait to see.if I can make it 3 for 3 on the same piece of ground.

Back in the ground blind for my last sit of the year. Brisk wind but at least it is blowing at my back for the most likely shots....distances out to 180 but I'll probably limit myself mature doe at 100-120 with the wind. We shall see. Got 3/4 bed of firewood for $60 that would cost me 300 in CO so today is already a win. 😉
