Dove season opener is what I always consider the start of “hunting season” for the year. I know that squirrel season opens before that, but never really have gotten into squirrel hunting when the trees are still plump with green leaves and the temp is pushing 100. Anyway, to me, dove season is always the start of my favorite 4 months of the year. Sitting in a seed corn field in the early morning, sipping coffee from a blue tin cup and listening to the world wake up to the chilled, dew covered morning has always been one of my favorite things. In a month, I will be running around obsessed with finding where a buck is bedded and spending every waking minute chasing whitetails. But, for a few short weeks, I can enjoy the calm that is dove season. I’ve been out twice now for doves. The first time was mainly just an hour scouting mission. Usually I hunt picked seed corn fields, but for some reason, this year the fields are late to be picked. So I’m hunting standing seed corn fields. This makes it a bit harder as there isn’t as much waste grain on the ground, the doves can’t see my decoys from near as far, and the flat open areas that I like to hunt are resigned to be basically around the outside of the field where they’ve stomped male rows. My scouting mission produced 2 doves in an hour. If all things were as normal, I usually can limit out in that timeframe. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of taking my two boys out (7 and 5) for their first time in the dove field. We sat for about 2 hours and ended up bagging 10. That was not my focus though. My focus was rather on showing them part of the life that I was made for. Observing peaceful birds decoying in and watching my boys faces’ light up when they got to go retrieve a bird was amazing. Straight shooting to all and let’s kill some doves.

That’s what it’s all about right there. Good on ya for getting those boys out there and not making it about what is killed, but the actual hunt itself.

Hunted an old hs friends place Saturday afternoon. Lots of birds. Shooting was horrible. Farmer down the road told me he'd be chopping silage in the next week or so.
I have enjoyed dove hunting but never got too crazy about it. Last 2 seasons have been a blast for me. Good challenge, no bulky gear and they eat nice!
Great job getting your kids out there. Saw a few young guns Saturday a bit older but maybe 9 to 12 yrs old. They were all smiles and running to get birds.

The Family that had a huge influence on my life and Hunting quit hunting. I miss those days every day especially during hunting season. I can only keep the memories alive by hunting and telling them stories of my hunts and try reigniting the flame inside them and start hunting once again . Dove season is here and I’m out there. It’s great to see that your children are getting involved with hunting.
