Background: I have a hunting rifle (bolt) in 30-06. Never really looked at using it much in Indiana, but decided to get a scope mounted and play with it this coming season.
Expected ranges I would be hunting would 250-400 yards, perhaps 450 yards max.
Old man eyes have me looking at:
Leupold VX 5HD 3x15x44
VORTEX Viper HS 4x16x44
Burris Signature HD 3x15x44
Whichever I get will be mounted in steel bases & dovetail rings.
Looking for comments from those of you that have used any of the 3. The Good, the bad and the ugly.
Thanks in advance.
Paul

Iโm a leupold fan so my thoughts would lean that way, with that said my most recent scope purchase was a March ๐ณ

I would go somewhere that Carrie's all 3 and look thru them side by side. Whatever looks clearest or brightest to you, go for it. Most glass in the same class will suffice at standard ranges. Bass Pro or Cabelas probably gonna have the widest selection.

Realistically, the 400-450 yards will be playing with steel plates at my place down south.
The fields I will be hunting, typical range is 200-325. Usually use my 6.5, but just looking for something different this year up in fields outside plymouth.

All 3 would suit you. With the distance listed, you will have to get target turrets and "dial up/down" or get a mil-dot (or similar) reticle and use it. I'd zero @ 200 yds., and use something in the 150g-168g bullet weight range. You will be using it at the highest power for the steel, most likely around 10x-12x for hunting. When hunting I keep it lower than that. If further away you can always increase the power, but if something pops up close it's hard to turn it down fast.
