Some of you on Hunting-Indiana have donated old vintage and classic fishing tackle and gear to a fun experience for me and my grandkids. So over the next weeks, I'll include some pics and stories as the journey plays out. I finally had a chance to head over to a pond with one of my grandsons last night. It's just a retention pond in his other Papaw's backyard. But, Tyler was jumping at the chance to try some of the old tackle that Woody sent us. I'll let Woody describe some of the history of the tackle if he desires. So, we started him out on a old vintage jitterbug. He got hooked up with a nice bass that promptly shook free. After quite a few casts with little action, Tyler started digging through the assortment and felt he could have better luck with an old yellow tailed marabou jig. He laughed at the jig because its red head was worn to the point that it was more "lead" than "red!" He thought it looked cool and insisted we fish these old lures just the way they were! Man, did the scene change! Well after dark, he continued to go crazy with the lil ole jig! On past sunset, he had already caught a dozen bluegill and 4 bass! In the days ahead we'll play on other waters with various donated bits of vintage and classic tackle and gear! A few pics from last night:

The tackle box full of lures and other fishing stuff has to be at least 50 years old as they belonged to my father in law who passed away 47 years ago. He didn’t fish much last 5 or so years before his death. He loved fishing though.
The tackle box has been in my garage ever since. High Cotton had posted about some “vintage fishing equipment” for his grand kids so I thought it would be an excellent way to pass them on. Hopefully they will get some use out of them and maybe catch some whoppers.
Best of luck to the High Cotton clan!

One of the lures (or one like it) caught this 5+ pound largemouth bass out of Dogwood Lake March 14, 1971. Jim McIntire was the fisherman .

At a recent family gathering, my nephew's 7 yr old son came up to me inquiring about a day that I could take him fishing. His 5 yr old shadow of a sister demanded that she should come along too! Due to a job being postponed, this was the weekend that worked out for me. Woody, you'll be happy to know that we put the Bayou Boogie and the Jitterbug to good use! Here is the lil fella with his first bass on the Bayou Boogie: And then one of the bass on the Jitterbug: You could have heard him shouting across the farm, "I caught a fish! I caught a fish! Hey everybody, I caught a fish!" (Not that there was anybody but his immediate family around) Then I had to get his lil sister in on the action as she reeled in the gills from my hand tied foam spiders. All caught with my vintage H.L. Leonard "Golden Shadow" fly rod. It was quite a hoot to watch her play with the fish before releasing back into the water: Hang in there Genesis! I'm in the process of reworking the vintage reel you sent me. That will be coming soon as I pair it with an old vintage rod, gifted from a friend at church!

That’s great!
The old lures will still catch fish, that’s for sure!
Glad you all are putting them to good use and making memories!

What a great time helping kids catch fish and have a ball. They will remember these times forever. So many folks dont have time, knowledge, or even the desire to do things like this.
My wife and MIL take our Luke fishing during the week when I'm working. Every single time they go, I get texts and pictures. It's a real thrill to see all their enthusiasm and commitment to keep Luke busy and interested.
