I have had a steady customer for several years now that has generated a lot of work for me. She owns a handful of apartments that need regular upkeep and she has a coffee shop project that was slowed by COVID that has also been a source of fill in work for me.
This wonderful lady called me today and asked if I might have interest in a free charter boat fishing trip to Lake Michigan!
Seems her husband and son go annually with at least one other person. The friend had to drop out due to a funeral and the husband didn't know anyone else who would/could go.
My customer told him that I would enjoy something like that, so... I do know him, but not well. I only know him through her but he seems like a nice enough guy. I guess he told the wife that "yes, he thinks I would fit right in"!
So, we will put into Lake Michigan from Portage Indiana and appears we will be going for coho salmon and lake trout.
Needless to say, I'm excited!

This is a generous offer when you consider how much it costs to charter a boat on Lake Michigan. Make sure you get a license and stamps. If you get lucky enough to hook a big KING or a big LAKER you will never forget this trip. BTW these fish a really great eating.
Your a lucky man!

I'll have to check, but the impression was that the trip is all inclusive. I was told to bring nothing but food and drink.

This time of the year Coho is the target fish easy to catch, fantastic eating. Lake trout are always around but Kings are few in numbers. You will need a regular fishing license and a Trout stamp.
Keep us posted with photos.

It's confirmed. We will be going after coho salmon and a license and stamp are required. It just so happens that I turned 64 years old last November so in February I purchased a senior life fishing license, which includes the salmon/trout stamp. I'm good to go.

Dang, you should have great weather. Bring sunscreen! Well now they're calling for 55-65°, windy and chances of scattered rain. I don't mind the wind or cool, but I hear they may not go out if it's storming. Some lame excuse like lightning ⚡⚡⚡. Maybe not so lame...

Fishing has been slow right now because of the storms from last week. The wind is your worst enemy on the big lake as long as it's fairly calm or a south wind it's great. Fish don't mind the rain. Next week is looking better. GOOD LUCK!

Found out today this is quite a bit smaller boat than the charter I took in the Gulf of Mexico. There were 50 people on that boat. I was told today that there won't be more than 6 people on board for this trip.

I have never fished on a boat with more than 6 people which is about average. Coast Guard has rules about charter boat numbers. Most boats that charter on the Great Lakes are about 30+/- feet in length. You will be fine. FYI a lot of folks who have never fished on the Great Lakes get cold feet and bow out, I can say for sure your Captain wants to be safe and see that you and others have a good time. Some mornings when we start out it feels a bit rocky but when you start yelling "FISH ON" you will soon forget about everything except fishing. BE ADVENTURIOUS. Keep us posted with good photos.

One other bit of advise: take DRAMAMINE the night before and the morning of.
Even if you think you won't get sea sick TAKE IT.

A boat with 50 people is what’s known as head boat there isn’t any trolling going on them boats just stop and drop your line….salt water fishing. Been on many head boats on the east coast fun times.

Plus keep your eyes on the horizon and limit looking down. There is no recovery from motion sickness lol I was on a charter and a guy got "sea sick" and it was bad. He begged the Captain to just shoot him with the flare gun.

Been in waves on Michigan where you see only water at eye level. Waves were massive. Guys were puking in the head and on the table. Caught fish if you could make it to the pole. Couldn’t stand up. Storm went by, it was like glass and no more bites. Like being in a washing machine.

Well, weather for Sunday looks bad, and the boat captain called today to tell my customer so. He said if we wanted to go on Sunday he would give it a shot, but weather was not going to be good. However, as luck would have it, the captain said he had a last minute cancellation and he had an opening for tomorrow morning. It's going to be almost perfect weather. 80° for a high, mostly sunny, 7% chance of rain, and calm winds out of the south.
Wish me luck. I'm going to have some fun tomorrow.
