After further discussion, Tyler has decided that he would like to try shooting a turkey with the shotgun his other Papaw gave him, a JC Higgins Model 20, 12 gauge pump with a fixed Modified choke. He is not that concerned with killing a turkey and would rather have the opportunity with the JC Higgins! For now the plan is to sit together and I'll have my Mossberg, 500A. As for my current ammo stock (all 12 gauge): Quantity of 11 Hevi-13, 2-3/4" #5's. Quantity of 12 Hevi-13, 3" #5's. Quantity of 10 Winchester Super X, 3" #4's. One day we'll get to the range and pattern the guns and ammo.

My grandson Tyler and I got down to our property to pattern the turkey loads this afternoon. To start, it took him a half dozen shots with each gun and some bird shot to synch his point of aim to his point of impact. He learned that he needs about 1/2 of his front bead lined down the barrel of the JC Higgins, aiming at the wattles. Then he learned that he needed to line up the front and rear beads of the Mossberg, aiming at the head. He got a bit of an education once we got to the 3" shells. With his shoulder taking successive hits, we did end up with 4 good patterns. I could see that he was getting thumped pretty good so we decided to call it good for now and process this data before trying to stretch the range any further. I printed these targets, compliments of the Missouri Conservation Department. They suggest that it takes 4 shots "in the white" to kill a turkey. This is the JC Higgins at 20 yards (Hevi-13, #5, 2-3/4") with 10 kill pellets: This is the JC Higgins at 30 yards (Hevi-13, #5, 2-3/4") with 5 kill pellets: This is the Mossberg at 30 yards (Hevi-13, #5, 3") with 12 kill pellets: This is the Mossberg at 30 yards (Win Super X, #4, 3") with 9 kill pellets:

No worries, I'll get ya some #6 lead to try. I'll check my grab bag of waterfowl shells to see if I have any Hevi-shot in there but unfortunately I think they are all 3".

We had a chance to get out and do a little more testing. We decided to top the Mossberg with my Romeo5 red dot. That alone was probably the best outcome from the day. We started by simply checking my pattern on plain paper at 30 yards with some bird shot. I was really surprised to see the center of impact about 10 inches to the right of my point of aim. After some adjustment, at various ranges, we started to see improvement. Then I started to shoot the different loads. Satisfied with patterns, I moved back to 40 yards. At 30, 35 and 40 yards I was a bit surprised...Consistently, my best pattern and group was with the Winchester #4 shot, 3 inch. We may try to increase the distance but the shoulder and cheek had taken a good pounding at this point and we're ok with limiting the distance if we don't have a chance to practice more.

A solid pattern at 40yds will handle 99.9% of hunting situations.

Not sure what is going on. But when I try to attach a pic from Imgur, The post wants to add a link from Photobucket. I haven’t used that for years! I’ll try to post a pic of the pattern later. Best pattern with the Winchester #4 at 40 yards:

Price isn’t much after you sight it in. What’s an extra $10 per turkey?

Price isn’t much after you sight it in. What’s an extra $10 per turkey? Yep, I spend more in gasoline just going back and forth to my hunting spot.

Price isn’t much after you sight it in. What’s an extra $10 per turkey? True. But it's the trying many different loads and then zeroing in that's the tough part. If you get lucky right away and find what works, or just "settle" on something, no worry. Nowadays, just finding shells is the worry.

That’s 35 yds. My gun didn’t like the tss. It was less than 1/3 of that at same distance. Since I’ve only shot at one Turkey over 35 yds I dont see the point Plus lately I’ve been using my bow

Patterned with MagBlend this morning. 40 yards… I’m thinking the slight left is my Age Related Macular Degeneration. Still good enough to kill.
