Is anyone making the trek for any cool hunts this year? Right now I think other than whitetail and turkey in surrounding states for me is a deer hunt in Florida and Sitka Deer/Bear in Alaska.

I apply all over and hope to draw a tag or 2. Won't know final plans until June. Where are you going in Alaska? DIY or guided?

A mix, a buddy's family owns a brown bear yacht hunting business and lives on Sitka Island. He invited me up there so he'll guide me.

Not too sure about anything else yet KY elk I’ve put in every year still not been pulled I put in for a number of years and no luck. Without preference points being issued, I have the same odds every year. Since I never win anything that I enter, without preference points added every year I apply I gave up. Plus, if 2 guys wanted to go, there was no guarantee that they'd be drawn and hunt together. They could both get drawn but each could be hunting the opposite ends of the state. If that has changed, I'd start applying again, but I ain't going to go by myself and try to get one out by myself. I suppose I could hire a guide, but at what cost?

I think they need to go to a preference point system like other states. Do they still have a lottery to see who gets the license, then another lottery to see what area a person will be hunting?

Greg, I read what you posted, but my math skills are lacking. If there are preference points then the odds for a non-resident that has multiple preference points getting drawn are still better than an individual getting drawn in a system where there are no preference points. I don't have the skills to do the math in regards to a person's chances with preference points in their pocket vs. one with no points.
Now another question. A friend knows of an area and of a landowner in Ky that has elk on their property. He knows what zone it is. If I were to be draw an elk tag, can I specify (on the application) what zone I want to apply for? Can 2 or 3 people apply for the same zone and get pulled together? Or rather if each person was lucky enough to get pulled, would they be hunting in the same area together?

The odds being NR are slim but still better than MI can’t even get a chance at getting a tag and that sucks my buddy Steve is close to the area they are in I’ve seen them many a time when I was up visiting and fishing Higgins and Holten lake with him We’d take a drive about dark up to the zone and watch them

That loyalty is only for residents though. I’m sure I’ll throw my name and my sons in the drawing again.

If a preference point system was in place then your odds would go up for every year that you didn't get drawn. As it stands now you odds don't, so it IS strictly luck of the draw.
Still don't know the answer to this: Now another question. A friend knows of an area and of a landowner in Ky that has elk on their property. He knows what zone it is. If I were to be draw an elk tag, can I specify (on the application) what zone I want to apply for? Can 2 or 3 people apply for the same zone and get pulled together? Thanks. And people think our rules are complicated here.
I beg to differ with their assumptions with the preference point system. The way it works out West is that there are certain pools of people that get a percentage of tags alloted to people with "X" amount of preference points. Say you have 10 preference points. The higher number of preference points you have the greater your chances of drawing a tag. A buddy and I are maxed out on preference points in Wyoming for elk. We started buying them the first year that they were offered and have purchased one every year since. We have a MUCH higher chance in getting drawn for the area that we want than someone that has less preference points.

My problem with building points and these long shot odds draws is my age. Might cost a bit more, but there are plenty of places you can still get an elk tag and go elk hunting this fall without having to compete for a few tags.

We have a MUCH higher chance in getting drawn for the area that we want than someone that has less preference points. Difference is Wyoming has a much greater supply of elk tags than Kentucky to help cycle through applicants. Also many fewer residents wanting elk tags = more tags for NRs. If Kentucky instituted a preference point system, the only people who would ever have decent odds of drawing a tag would be children, who got a point every year until they were a senior citizen. If you are currently competing with 1075 people per tag with zero points, next year you would be competing with 1075 people per tag with one point. Still no advantage. You would have to outlive everyone else in your point pool.
